Hebrews 1:13

Summary

God has eternally purposed to exalt Christ, seating Him at His right hand as King and Priest, actively extending His righteous rule through His Spirit and His people amidst a world that often despises Him. Though humanity is prone to rebellion and spiritual dullness, Christ's priestly work cleanses and keeps His people in God's grace. Therefore, all are called to repent of hostility, honor Christ as the supreme object of affection, and willingly submit to His rule, serving Him as abundant, pure, and light-reflecting dew, lest they face His ultimate wrath and judgment.

03Please turn in your Bibles to Hebrews chapter 1. Hebrews chapter 1. I'll be looking at verse 13 today. Hebrews chapter 1 and verse 13. But to which of the angels has he ever said, sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet? Let's pray. Heavenly Father, we bow our hearts before you this morning and before your word, as you have spoken here in the passage before us. Father, a word that has been spoken many times and applied many times in Scripture and throughout our lifetimes. It's a scripture, Father, that is most used in the New Testament. Father, we want to come under its jurisdiction today. We want to see how you have exalted Christ, that you have exalted him in the past, you have seated him. At your right hand, and you have promised to exalt him again upon his return. She put down all of his enemies. Father, and it's our heart's desire this morning to not be among his enemies, but to be among those who honor him as you honor him, to welcome him as you welcome him, and delight in him as you delight in him. So, Father, our goal this morning is to exalt the name of Christ, to pay attention to what you are saying through him to us today.

11So, Father, we know that we are unable to receive truth, let alone respond to truth, if it is not a word that comes and an act that comes from you and empowered by you. And so, we ask for your Holy Spirit to come, illumine, convict, awaken, and cause us to yearn for the truth and be taught by the truth that we are studying this morning so that you may be exalted. For it's in Christ's name. Amen.

53Well, something happened about 50 years ago. I was in the third grade. It was a soccer game outside during recess. It was actually one of my most memorable events that took place in the third grade. It's about the only thing I really remember. It was that significant. It was quite a soccer game. What we would do during recess is we would quickly rush out, and everybody would line up. We would have two captains, and they would choose the soccer team. And then we would play soccer. And so you had Captain 1, Captain Number 2. And as usual, everyone's standing out there. Captain team goes, Captain 1 starts the selection process, and he chooses one of the very best soccer players. No surprise. Then the second captain did something very unusual. He chose one of the weakest players. And then it was the first captain's time to choose again, and he chose another one of the strongest players. Now you got the two strongest players on the same team, and that just has never happened. And then the second captain chose again one of the next weakest. I mean, he chose girls.

28And not even the strongest girls. The weakest girls. And this is how the selection process went. I never saw anything like it. I'm like, is this guy that far out of it? And so, what happens is that we had the most lopsided soccer match that I have ever seen in the history of my life. Okay, maybe I'm a little hyperbole, but at the time, yeah, we had the dream team against the weaklings. Couldn't believe the poor choices, and I was looking forward. I was on the dream team. I was on the one of the strong side. We were going to slaughter them.

19Well, we went out, played, and when the bell rang to go back inside, the weaklings had significantly outscored the dream team. I mean, it wasn't even much of a contest. I was shocked. And I tell you, I'm still trying to get over it. I thought a lot about what happened that day, and then one day it hit me. The second captain had understood something that the rest of us didn't. Something actually very brilliant for us. A third grader.

03We'll come back to that. In our text this morning, the author cites another Old Testament passage that demonstrates Jesus' superiority over the angels. So he's going through chapter one and he's articulating how Jesus is superior to the angels and why you should pay attention to Jesus more than anyone else in the realm of creation, even angels. He demonstrates in this passage that God has exalted him already above the angels and promises to exalt him further. And so we're going to come back to Hebrews chapter 1 in just a moment, but before we do that, let's turn in your Bibles to Psalm 110. Psalm 110. He cites the first verse of Psalm 110. Psalm 110 is the most often cited Old Testament text in the New Testament, and it clearly outlines God's prophetic plan for the Messiah.

23Because God has purposed to exalt the Messiah. His name above every name in heaven and on earth. And so I want us to look at how Christ is exalted. Look at this chapter in Psalms. See how God has exalted Christ so that you will exalt him in like manner. So first we're going to look at Christ's. First, we'll look at how Christ is exalted above his enemies, as it is articulated in Psalm 110. Then we will come back to Hebrews chapter 1 and look at how the author of Hebrews is using it to describe how he has also been exalted above the angels. And so as you come to Psalm chapter 10, 110, you're looking at God's exaltation of Christ over his enemies. There's an emphasis of what's going to happen to Christ's enemies. We'll just look at this. And first of all, I want you to see that in this passage, in this chapter, seven verses, there are two prophetic time periods. Two prophetic time periods concerning Christ's exaltation of the Messiah over all of his enemies. Of his enemies.

03And these two prophetic time periods are first and foremost commanded by Yahweh. Look at verse 1. A psalm of David. The Lord says to my Lord, sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet. Yahweh, and it's important. Some of you, you have versions that say the Lord, capital L-O-R-D, said to my Lord, capital L, little O, little R, little D. A Psalm of David. This is of David. It's a poem, a song. It's literally in the Hebrew, it says, an oracle of Yahweh, or a decision of Yahweh, a utterance, a declaration of Yahweh. And so what you have, you have the Lord God, Yahweh, speaking to Adonai, the Lord master. The Lord God, Yahweh, speaking to Adonai.

15And this psalm is used five times in the book of Hebrews. It's a very important text. We'll come to it again and again as we go through Hebrews. Adonai, the Lord's master. David's Lord is the Messiah. It's Christ. When you see the word Messiah, that is speaking of God's anointed one in the Hebrew language. When you see the word Christ, that is speaking of God's anointed one in the Greek language. But it's the same word, it's the same meaning, same person, Christ, Messiah. Yahweh God speaking to Adoniah, God, Lord, Master. So you have a very unique, almost like Psalm John 17, where Jesus is praying to the Father. You get the Son communicating to the Father, and here you have this internal communication from the Father to the Son, a declaration, an oracle.

20Yahweh God speaking to Christ. It is a prophetic word that concerns the program for the Messiah. First, you look at Yahweh commands Adonai to sit, to take his seat, and remain seated at his right hand. Now, the right hand is a place of honor. The right hand is also a place that speaks of closest solidarity with, the most faithful to, the one in complete unity with. So you have Yahweh. God speaking to Adonai God, take your seat at my right hand. You're in the closest solidarity with me. You are one. We are one of the same in purpose, in mind, in essence. It's a complete unity of mind.

21God to Christ and Christ to God, a unity. But it's at a point. Notice, sit, the Lord says to my Lord, sit at my right hand until. Until. Preposition, until, as far as, while I am doing something. It's something, it's as far as a point in time when something is accomplished. I don't get, don't, it's reading too much into it to say, well, until means that he's getting up and leaving. No, the Messiah is not leaving the right hand, that seat. He's not ever going to vacate that. But he's saying, sit here and remain seated because Yahweh is going to do something for Adonai.

17Yahweh promises to put down Adonai's enemies. So first he commands David's Lord to sit. And second, he promises. To put down David's Lord's enemies. Notice how he says, I make, sit here, until I make, until I accomplish something for you. I will set, I will place, you stay here while I set, as far as I place your enemies, those who are hating you. You sit here until I deal with them and make them a place under your feet.

08And this is the verse that the author of Hebrews cites in Hebrews 1 to demonstrate Jesus' superiority over the angels. But we want to walk through Psalm 110 this morning. And as we briefly walk through this psalm this morning, two time periods, two time periods commanded by Yahweh God that speak about the Messiah's program upon the earth. It's a prophetic word of what is going to take place on planet earth. Second point. So these two prophetic time periods, first, recognize it's commanded by Yahweh. Second, the first prophetic time period is a time. When Christ rules in the midst of his enemies. A time when Christ rules in the midst of his enemies.

12Look at verse 2. The Lord will stretch forth your strong scepter from Zion, saying, Rule in the midst of your enemies. So this is what Yahweh God is going to do for Adonai the master. It will be: the Lord is going to extend his rule. He's going to stretch forth. Sit here. Yahweh God is going to stretch forth your scepter. He will send forth your scepter. What is the scepter? Well, we spent some time already in Hebrews 1 and verse 8 talking about the scepter because in Psalm 45, the writer of Hebrews is quoting Hebrews, I mean, Psalm 45, 6, which speaks about the scepter of uprightness.

13He says, You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness. That is the righteous scepter. A spirit of righteousness. A strong scepter. A scepter that is majestic. A scepter that cannot be resisted, a powerful, firm, unrelenting scepter. It's a spirit of holiness. The Lord will stretch forth your strong scepter, your love for righteousness, your hatred of lawlessness, the scepter. Righteousness, uprightness is the scepter of his throne. And he says to him, rule. You rule. Here's the command: you rule from Zion, Jerusalem. The Lord will stretch forth your strong scepter from Zion, Jerusalem, saying, You rule in the midst of your enemies.

33Picture, you get the picture of Christ seated at Yahweh's right hand, and Yahweh taking Christ's scepter and stretching it forth to rule over, to rule in the midst of his enemies on planet earth. Govern, subdue, you. Exercise your authority. Your preferences are to be in the earth and to be embraced in the earth. You. And notice it says, the Lord will stretch forth your strong scepter. You, it is Messiah reigning. It's Adonai's personal rule according to his preferences through his Spirit.

30But notice, rule in the midst of your enemies. Look at that statement. Rule in the midst of your enemies. Yahweh's commands implies that there's a period of time when Adonai's enemies are alive and well. Yet, despite their presence, Christ's rule will also be alive and well. His enemies are going to be unable to keep him from exercising his dominion upon the earth. Well, how does that happen? How can that happen? Well, he's going to answer that in verse 3. But just for the moment, from the vantage point of Psalm 110, there is an epoch in human history that is coming when the Lord, Lord God, has made Master Christ, has seated Master. Christ at his right hand and is actively extending his rule from Jerusalem. And he's doing so through his holy and powerful scepter, personal scepter, spirit of holiness, the very spirit of God himself, the very spirit of Christ himself. That is what is going forth. And he's saying, rule in the midst of your enemies.

09But how? What is the means? Well, that means is given in verse 3. Yahweh's, he has a command to extend Adonai's rule, but then he has a means to extend Adonai's rule, Christ's rule. Verse 3: Your people will volunteer freely in the day of your power, in holy array from the womb of the dawn. Your youth are to you as the dew. So, question: if Messiah is not on planet Earth, how is his rule going to be extended? And the answer is through your people. That first word, your people, your kindred, your family. Family members, your citizens, your nation, your people, the ones who belong to you. That's going to be the way Yahweh God extends Audonai's rule.

18It speaks of an internal rule in the hearts of his people. He will hold such a place, such a special place. Christ will hold such a special place in the hearts of his people that they will, look back at the text, verse 3, will volunteer freely. I love this phrase in the Hebrew. It speaks of a voluntary offering. They will be voluntary offerings to you. An offering of the free will kind. There's no forced service here. There's no conversion by the sword.

06There's no compulsion other than an inward compulsion of love and affection for Messiah. That is the means through which Yahweh God is going to extend the Messiah's rule in the midst of his enemies. There is a lesson for church. Membership here that I feel like I need to point out. This is why I am baptistic. This is why I am a Baptist. Because only voluntary church membership can fit this prophecy. What I mean by that is in a baptistic tradition, we recognize that there are no members of the church except those who have been born again through God's sanctifying work by His Spirit to cause us to be born again from above. That is a baptism that only He does. We only can recognize it. He baptizes, He causes people to be born from above, and He places them in the church. We don't have that power to say who's in the church and who's not. We can only recognize what God does.

26And so that is why we reject any kind of membership where somebody else baptizes somebody and says, Now you're a member of the church. That's not voluntary. That's why there is no such thing as a state church. A state church is a church by compulsion. And it's not a biblical church. There is no such thing as a state church, biblically speaking. Yeah, the state may want to say that we got this church here. No, that's not a church because. The church, the people that is prophetically speaking about the Messiah, are going to volunteer freely.

11Freely. And notice when they're going to volunteer freely. In the day of your power. In the day of your power, verse 3. Now, what day is that? Well, you've only got two main options. The day of his power is either his resurrection or his second coming. But the second coming is ruled out because there is no volunteering on that day. It's his resurrection. And he'll speak of that routinely. The day of his power coming forth. Certainly, all of his first advent is an unveiling of that power, but it's that resurrection that puts the exclamation point on it.

03And notice. Notice your people will volunteer freely in the day of your power. Notice how they will be clothed in holy array. Literally, the phrase is in the beauty of holiness, in the splendor of holiness, due to Messiah's work, the day of his power, and what that day of his power accomplished. There is cleansing. All of a sudden, your people volunteer freely in the day of your power, and they are arrayed in the splendor of holiness. From the womb of the dawn, your youth are to you as the dew. From the womb of the dawn, what does that mean? Well, from the womb speaks of a beginning point. From the beginning point of the dawn, what is the dawn? Daybreak.

01From the beginning point of daybreak, in fact, the Greek Septuagint translates this the morning star. It's that moment before daybreak, that sign in the sky, that moment, that the daybreak, from that very beginning point of daybreak. What is he speaking about there? Well, he's just talked about the day of his power. They're going to volunteer freely at the first light of the day of his power. You see that resurrection. And notice they will volunteer freely. Your youth are to you as the dew. Notice, notice how he says, your youth.

55The Messiah is not going to get a leftover ragtag group. He's going to get people in their strength. I love youth. Don't you love the idealism, the optimism of youth? Let's go take home the world. Yes, let's end world hunger and end all wars. Let's do it. Let's go. Let's do it with the gospel. Isn't that kind of like that youthful idealism? It's good to temper youthful idealism with seasoned wisdom and life and scripture. But wow, youth, there's an enthusiasm, there's an optimism, there's an excitement. And the good thing about youth is they have many days ahead.

49Let me say something to you, young people. One of the reasons why I wanted to come to College Station when we decided to take a pastorate is I know there's a lot of young people here. Give yourself to the Lord while you're young. Give yourself to Him while you're young. What a privilege it is to serve Him all your life. And you're not too young. If you're in this room, you can hear my voice. I say to you: devote yourself to the King of kings in your youth. Choose His way, accept His invitation. Invitation. Give yourself fully.

35Look at this metaphor. Your youth are to you as the dew. Now, let's just think about the dew for just a moment. What can you say about the dew? What a metaphor for young people. Dew, a gift, a ruling group of people that God is going to use to extend Messiah's reign among the midst of his enemies. Well, first of all, we can say this about dew. It is abundant. It is abundant. It just seems to voluntarily spring forth out of thin air. It's marvelous. Even under the canopy of darkness, the dew just springs forth out of thin air voluntarily. It is abundant.

41And this is a promise that Yahweh God has made to Adonai. Friends, young people, be among this group. Raise your hand and say, Here I am. Second thing we can say about. There's a lot of things we can say about dew, but the second thing I want to say about do is that it's pure. It's pure. It's the cleanest of water. Let me tell you something about the glory of any nation is found in the virtues and the direction of their youth.

22That's the glory of the nation. What's going on in the hearts of the youth, the virtues that they hold, the directions that they are taking. Young people, abundant and virtuous young people, promised to the Messiah. Third thing, it's beautiful. Dew is beautiful. Listen, when young people put their minds to do what is right, it is a beautiful thing. And what, think about how Yahweh God wants to bless Adonai. He gives him a people, young people, young at heart, abundant, pure, beautiful, putting their minds to do what is right. Listen, again, young people, give your life to him now.

28Serve him. Third thing I'd say about Dew is: it's refreshing. It's refreshing. Against a barren landscape of the youthful decadence in our society, in this self-assertion, in the worldly ambition of so many young people today, among that mentality that I can do whatever I want when I want to do it, and shame, and I can destroy anybody who tells me that I can't. My heart is king. What I go after is my glory, and I am completely justified to go after it. And how dare you question anything that my heart wants to pursue?

19Amidst that decadent landscape of the world today, these beautiful, refreshing dewdrops of young people who say who just don't go with it. And say, you know, there is something better than what I want. It's what God wants. It's what is right. And I will gladly bow to what is right over doing wrong and asserting myself. Oh, refreshing. And that's. That's really the only hope of revival that I see in this country: is that there are some young people that seem to just not stand in the way of the sinners of our times or in the council of the ungodly. They march to a different drumbeat, they march to the holy calling of heaven, to the scepter extending forth that Yahweh Himself is extending on Christ's behalf.

31Fifth thing I want to say about Dew is that it reflects the light. It reflects not only is it abundant, not only is it pure, not only is it beautiful, not only is it refreshing, but it reflects the light. It makes the ground sparkle with light from above, doesn't it? Reflects the light. It shows forth God in a dark world. Again, young people, be among them. This is the highest calling. Yeah, there may be other things that you're to do with your life in terms of courses and jobs and who you marry and all that kind of stuff. But above all of that, volunteer freely. Give yourself to Christ's rule.

27It's the most glorious privilege. Let your days, the few ones that you have, be spent for his glory. Be among those people who volunteer freely in the day of Christ's power, in holy array, from the womb of the dawn, to be his youth as the dew. You see, although the world may be filled with those who despise Jesus, this verse is promising there will always be those who belong to him. And that's because Yahweh is extending his rule. They do not bow to the gods of our times. They enthusiastically welcome his ruling scepter.

15We love him. We speak of him. And we want to influence the world for him. That's who we are as the church: salt and light. One more thing, verse 4. Look at Yahweh's permanent assignment to Adonai. The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind. You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek. Now, God has sworn. Yahweh, God has sworn, promised by oath. And he is not regretting it. He will not change his mind. He is not rethinking it. He'll never back away from it.

07He has sworn and will not change his mind. You are a priest forever. You are a priest. Now, what is a priest? A priest is there for the well-being of his people, a mediator, someone to be there between God and man. You are a priest forever. Now, you think about it. How can there be this all these youth arrayed in holiness? How can there be all these, like the dew? How can these people even exist? Well, it's because of Christ's cleansing work and his keeping work.

47It's as the lamb, as the sacrifice, and as the priest who offers himself. We often tend to minimize this role of Christ in our lives. We think about his salvation and getting us a glorious future in heaven. But ask yourself this question: what keeps me in the good graces of God? What is holding you in the good graces of God? Because if you look honestly in your heart, you see a proneness to forget and wonder and neglect. What is keeping us? What is it within God? That restrains him from just blasting us off into space. Or you remember in Psalm 102 how the psalmist was saying, You have picked me up and hurled me out of your presence. He was speaking of the nation. But what is keeping God from picking me up? Because I look into my life and I see imperfections. I still see a slowness, a dullness. You see it in the disciples' lives. You see this slowness and dullness. What is it that just holds God back from just done with you?

09That's the work of Christ as our mediator and priest. He knows how to keep us in the good graces of God. He brought us to, He was an expression of God's grace. And He draws us to God's grace, in grace. He draws us to His grace. And then He keeps us in that grace as our priest. He is forever. Present reality. You are a priest forever. Present reality, but with continual effects perpetually. You are a king forever according, you are a priest forever according to the order. Order of Melchizedek.

03Melchizedek's name literally means king of the right, king of what is right, king of uprightness. You are forever a priest according to the order of Melchizedek. There's a king and a priestly office brought together in Melchizedek. The right hand of God is about ruling power, but it is also about mediation power, about keeping his people, those due of youth, in his good graces. Two offices joined together. And this makes sense. It's necessary, it's efficient to have the two offices, the king and priest. Because what happens if your king tells you one thing, but your priest goes and says, yeah, but before God, we did something different?

01Well, there's not going to be a disconnect. There's no disconnect between what is given to us as rule and what is mediated before God, or what God wants. The king's will is perfectly in line with the priest's will, and the priest's will is perfectly in line with the king's will. There's no disconnect. That's the one who is seated at the right hand of God on our behalf, ruling. I'll spend more time about Melchizedek. Kizadek later, because I think there's another several chapters that are going to talk about this priest, this king priest, in the book of Hebrews.

45But here's Messiah's honor: his honor will be that of the highest king and of the highest priest. And so, there is third. So, the two prophetic time periods. The first is a time when Christ rules in the midst of his enemies, but then there is a time when Christ shatters his enemies. And the two are different. There is coming a time when he will shatter his enemies. Look at verse 5. It's a day of wrath. It is a day. It is a relatively brief period of time. The Lord is at your right hand. He will shatter kings in the day of his wrath. The Lord is at your right hand.

36Who's at whose right hand? Is Yahweh at Adonai's right hand, or is Adonai at Yahweh's right hand? The Lord is at your right hand. I think it's very the Hebrew says, Adonai is at your right hand. So I don't think I need to spend a lot of time. Christ is at your, the Lord, Christ is at your right hand, Yahweh's right hand. Christ will shatter kings in the day of Christ's wrath. That's how I would put it. But Nancy, can I get you to come up here for a second?

20Because the scripture does this a lot. I want to demonstrate something because who's at whose right hand? So if I say, looking at you, we've got married 31 years ago, and she's my right hand. Okay, so she is at my right hand. But where does this place me in respect to her? On her left hand. Okay, so if I'm going to be on Nancy's right hand, I've got to be over here. Now I'm at Nancy's right hand. Okay? But so how, if, but in the Psalms, there are these times when Yahweh is at the Messiah's right hand, and it appears that the Messiah is at Yahweh's right hand. So which is it? Well, if you will stand like this, and I stand like this, guess what? We're both at each other's right hand, co-equal, same essence, ruling together. Now, when it relates to our family, she is the matriarch of our Home. And so she is the one. This says what goes. This is what happens. As it relates to the children, children, listen to your mom. Yeah, your mom, hopefully, and this one does, what her husband desires. But you can see in this how the Son relates to the Father. He always does what the Father wants. But the Father is saying, yeah, this is the one that's in charge of this whole realm. Now, you can also think of it in the context of the church. The church, Christ and his church. Christ is ruling.

11And his church is at the right hand. But in terms of the son and the father, they are one and the same. Both at the right hand. So, go ahead. Thank you. Thank you for that demonstration, Nancy. The Lord is at your right hand. And what happens after this, it's clearly Christ, because Christ's the one that's going to shatter. He's the one that's going to judge. He's the one that's going to be doing all it. He's speaking of the Lord is at your right hand. He will shatter kings in the day of his wrath.

51He will shatter. Adonai. Adonai is at your right hand. He will shatter. Literally, he will smash. He will crush. He will beat to pieces. He will decimate kings. Plural. Make sure you write that down. Plural, kings. In the day of his wrath. It's a day. It's hard to, you can't separate the day of the Lord, the day of Yahweh in the Old Testament, from the day of the Son because they're one and the same. He is the right hand. He is the one extending the rule.

30So, like in Psalm 2, it's kiss the Son, lest he be angry. So it is one and the same. Last psalm we looked at, last time, it was clear that Yahweh and the Son are put in the same place. So it's a day of wrath. Verse 5. But it's also a day of judgment. Look at verse 6. He will judge among the nations. He will fill them with corpses. He will shatter the chief men over a broad country. He, Adonai, he is the judge. All judgment is given to him. He will be the one deciding your case, my case, bringing justice, defending and upholding the right, punishing and condemning the wrong. This is what Messiah does. He is to bring forth justice to the nation. And look at what it says.

27Notice the verbs. He will judge. Second, he will fill them with corpses, dead body. He will fill all nations will experience massive human casualties. That's what this text is saying. He will fill them with corpses. He will shatter the chief men over a broad country. Now notice, he will shatter the chief men. In the Hebrew, it doesn't say chief men. It's not plural, it's a singular. The Hebrew actually says it like this: He will smash the head, singular, of the whole earth.

24Translators say, well, in context, maybe we can make it men. No, it's not what it says. And maybe, yeah, you're hitting the head. What does the head mean? The topmost in command. He is literally going to crush the head of singular, one head of the earth, the one who is in topmost command. He will smash. He will crush. Does that sound familiar? Point of it, it's a day of judgment. He will completely shatter the enemies. His enemies. But it's also, verse 7, a day of exaltation. Notice in verse 7, he will drink from the brook by the wayside. Therefore, he will lift up his head. He will drink from the brook of the wayside.

20It's a cryptic. This much I will say that it's clear. It implies a personal drinking, individual, human. It implies vigor. It implies a conquest that continues to go. But the Hebrew actually says, from the river valley, from the wadi, and it's not brook, the torrent, from the raging river by the wayside, he will drink. Certainly implies personal, maybe even restoration, vigor, vitality, but it's individual, personal. This isn't Yahweh, spirit God, God who is the spirit. This is God in flesh, drinking.

22Verse 5, or verse 7, he will lift up. Notice, he will lift up his head. In the Hebrew, it's a very clear, he's crushing one head, and he's elevating his own head. That's what's happened. Same word, Rosh. He will bring, he will exalt, he will elevate, he will crush the one head, and he will elevate himself so that others understand who he is. That's Psalm 110. Now, as you come back to Hebrews, come back to Hebrews chapter 1.

08Hebrews chapter 1 says this, verse 13. But to which of the angels has he ever said, sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet? So, what Hebrews is demonstrating is how God has exalted Christ over the angels. He has exalted them over the angels. So God has exalted Jesus. First of all, by honoring him above the angels, how many, this is what the psalmist is saying, how many angels has God commanded to sit at his right hand? The answer is none. When becomes a question, when will Jesus take his seat?

58Well, we're not left wondering. Because it's now a matter of history. Peter made this very clear. You remember in Acts chapter 2, his great sermon, the day of Pentecost, there was this great rushing wind that people heard, they gathered, and then they heard the word of God being proclaimed in various languages. And the very last verse, when Peter stands, the people are saying, What does this mean? And Peter stands up, let me tell you. And he goes through and he preaches. He preaches. And his very last verse that he cites is Psalm 110, verse 1. And this is what he says: Jesus, this Jesus, God raised up again, Acts 32, verse 32, to which we are all witnesses. God raised him up. Therefore, having been exalted to the right hand of God and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured forth that which you both see and hear. For it was not David who ascended into heaven, but he himself says, The Lord said to my Lord, sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet. Therefore, and this is how Peter ends the sermon based on this text. Let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified. Peter is saying this verse is fulfilled. God has exalted him. He is seated at the right hand. God, his scepter, his spirit has gone forth. And that's what you're seeing right here, the day of Pentecost.

40It's a great picture of what Psalm 110 was saying. Youth springing forth as the dew in holy array. Second, God has promised to put down all of Jesus' enemies. And this is future. Look at verse Hebrews 1.13. But to which of the angels has he ever said, sit at my right hand? None. Until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet? None. Listen, Jesus knew very well that this spoke about him. You remember the Pharisees had gathered in Matthew 22, and they were testing him. They had gathered as his enemies. Listen to what Jesus says. Matthew 22, 41. Now, while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question. What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he? They said to him, the son of David.

36Jesus said to them, Then how does David in the Spirit call him Lord? Saying, the Lord said to my Lord, sit at my right hand until I put your enemies beneath your feet. If David then calls him Lord, how is he his son? No one was able to answer him a word, nor did anyone dare from that day on. To ask him another question. It's interesting how Jesus silenced. He used this text. And then, you remember, the enemies, they didn't silence the enemies for good because they kept looking for a way to destroy them. And then finally, they bring him to try him in that monkey trial.

20And then, in Matthew 26, 63, the high priest said to him, I adjure you by the living God that you tell us whether you are the Christ, the Son of God. Jesus said to them, You have said it yourself. Nevertheless, I tell you, hereafter, you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of power, Psalm 110, and coming on the clouds of heaven, Daniel 7. Then the high priest tore his robes and said, He has blasphemed. What further need do we have of witnesses? And they crucified him. Hereafter, but this is what I, Jesus said, Hereafter, you who are trying me are going to see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand and coming.

09So don't think that sitting and coming are at a disconnect. You remember Ezekiel 1, where Ezekiel sees the glory of the Lord. What does he see? He sees these cherubim carrying this throne, and there's one seated on the throne. Those cherubim could take him wherever. Jesus isn't going to ever vacate the right hand of God. He is forever there. And yet that doesn't change the fact that he still rules and can still come in that kind of glory.

48Well, bottom line is: Jesus made much of God's name, and God is going to make much of Jesus' name. Well, how does this relate to us here today? Well, let us exalt Jesus. God exalts Jesus. Let us exalt Jesus by, first of all, repenting of all hostile thoughts and actions toward him. Don't be among his enemies. And some of you, that may be you today. Repent. Come out of that. You will find forgiveness. Turn away. Don't be among his enemies. Second, exalt Jesus by honoring him as the object of our supreme affection. He's the highest in heaven. Let him be the highest in your heart.

38Third, let us exalt Jesus by welcoming his rule over us, even in the presence of his enemies. Let us not be ashamed to take his name into the workplace, to stand on truth, to be that dew reflecting the light. In every setting that we have. Pay attention to Jesus. Well, what happened that dreadful day in my childhood when the dream team was beaten by the weaklings? After recess, I was shocked. How did this happen? I thought about it a lot, and then I realized. You see, there was a little rule that we had that the captain that chose second got to choose the field position. It just so happened that we had a field that had a little bit of a downhill course to it and a wind blowing downhill.

49It was brilliant. So the second captain got to choose the field position. He goes, we're kicking the ball with the wind. You're going to kick the ball against the wind. You're going to kick it uphill and against the wind. We're going to kick it downhill with the wind. And I remember, you can't kick one of those big red balls up a hill in a strong wind. And even the weakest can touch the ball and it would just blow right over our heads.

23Don't go through life kicking against the wind. God is doing something. He is exalting Christ. Pay attention to him. Young people, pay attention to him. All of us, pay attention to him. God has exalted Christ. He will continue to do so. So let's pay attention to him. Heavenly Father, we bow our hearts this morning, recognizing that you have purposed that Christ, who is already seated at your right hand, exalted above all the angels, will come again in glory, and he will be exalted over all his enemies and over all that is in the human realm, so that every knee will bow and every tongue confess in heaven and on earth and under the earth that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of you, our Heavenly Father.

18Father, thank you. Help us to respond in a way that is most pleasing to you. For it's in Christ's name we pray. Amen.
