The Promise of Heaven - Comfort in Times of Trouble - John 14:1-7

Thomas Baber

John 14:1-72019-08-25

Summary

Troubling times and the spiritual lifelessness caused by sin often lead humanity to despair and indifference toward God. Yet, Jesus Christ, the Way, the Truth, and the Life, offers the sole path to the Father's house, having prepared a place for all who believe. Those who trust in Him will be joyfully drawn into His eternal presence, their shame removed, while those who reject Him will flee in terror from their unatoned sin.

00Well again, good morning and howdy. Please open your Bibles to John chapter 14. We'll be looking at the first seven verses this morning. John chapter 14, verse 7. Let me go ahead and read those so we can frame our thoughts around God's Word. John 14, verse 1. Do not let your heart be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house are many dwelling places. If it were not so, I would have told you. For I go to prepare a place for you. If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to myself, that where I am, there you may be also. And you know the way where I am going. Thomas said to him, Lord, we do not know where you are going. How do we know the way? Jesus said to him, I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father but through me. If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on, you know him and have seen him.

26You know, if you've lived any amount of time at all, you Will know that troubling times often come our way, right? In fact, I would say that we face circumstances every day that call us to exercise faith in God and faith in his Christ. Of course, some situations that we face are more severe than others, but pretty much on a daily basis, especially as you come into a new semester, there are many reasons which you will be called to exercise faith in God.

11So, troubling times do come. And certainly, we're in a context where a very troubling time was about to come upon the disciples. I think it's at this point that the disciples realize something horrible is about to happen. John 13, you remember at the beginning of John 13, as we walked through it this summer, it was evident that the disciples still have visions of grandeur on their mind. They're talking about who's going to be the greatest and that kind of thing. And then Jesus then washes their feet as an expression of his love for them. He loves them to the uttermost, and he washes their feet. And you go on through John 13.

01And then all of a sudden, the betrayer is announced. Someone's going to betray me. And then Peter is told that he is going to deny him. And I think it's at this point they realize: okay, what's about to hit us? One of us is betraying him. The chief among us is actually going to deny even knowing him. What could possibly be on the horizon that would cause such mass defection? And I think it's at this point after Jesus announces Peter's denial that it sets in something horrible is about to happen.

53And so he starts this whole chapter comforting his disciples. I mean, and that's, they're on the eve. He is going to be betrayed. He is going to be denied. He is going to be abandoned by his friends. His close followers are going to be scattered and scattered, I guess. He's going to be crucified by enemies. And it's in this troubled time that Jesus talks to his disciples about heaven. He said he turns their mind and attention to heaven. And he calls his disciples to think about heaven and to let the thought of heaven transform their circumstances.

53Or certainly how they view them. Look at verse 1. He gives three commands there: Do not let your heart be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me. These are commands. Jesus says, Do not let your heart be troubled. That's that stirring. Do not let your heart be thrown into confusion and despair. There are many circumstances that we face that may get us depressed, get us down, troubled, anxious, and even lead to despair. Well, certainly, this is one of those situations for the disciples.

33You be believing in me. So he's saying, don't be troubled. Now, it's interesting. He himself is already troubled, right? Once he says in verse 31 of 13, when Jesus said this, I'm sorry, 21, when Judas was going to betray him. He says, he became troubled in spirit. He says, Truly, truly, I say one. So he is one who is troubled, but his cross and what he is about to go through is not something that's maybe troubling for him, but that is not something to be troubling his disciples. It is actually to their benefit. And so he gives them a context to understand all this. And he's saying, Look, you be believing in God and be believing in me. That's the command. Have faith in me. That's what he's telling them. Have faith in me, no matter what you're going to, no matter what you're about to see. Have faith in God and have faith in me. We've got this. We know what we're doing.

47Why shouldn't they be troubled, right? Denied? Abandoned? Jesus Himself troubled? Why shouldn't they be troubled? And the reason is because of the promise of heaven. And that's where he takes their minds. In troubling times, Jesus wants us to turn our attention to heaven and to have faith in him. That is the ultimate reason why we do not have to trouble or let our hearts be thrown into despairs, no matter what we may face in this world. Heaven gives us a context to understand it.

33And so here's the command: Have faith. Have faith. Be believing. And so I want you to see three reasons this morning why Jesus' disciples are not to despair, even in the most trying circumstances. Reasons why you don't have to despair no matter what life may throw at you. There are three reasons, and I want you to see them so that you will have faith in Jesus. That it will find reason to believe and reason to settle your hope in Jesus Christ, the one sent from God. Three reasons. Three reasons.

26Three reasons why Jesus' disciples should never despair. Number one, we have a place reserved for us in heaven. We have a place reserved for us in heaven. Listen, heaven is something to get excited about. It excited Jesus. It's what drives him in this passage. Heaven excited Jesus, and he wants the idea, the understanding of heaven to excite his disciples as well. And so I want you to see this excitement. But first, I want you to see how Jesus described heaven, and then I want you to see the certainty of heaven. Of course, he doesn't use the term heaven here, but he is certainly talking about heaven. So, first, look at how Jesus described heaven. Verse 2: In my father's house are many dwelling places, many dwelling places. He's describing heaven as his father's house.

30His concept of heaven is that of home. Home. He's like, Let me tell you about my father's house. Let me tell you about it. And he is excited about it. Yes, it's an excitement that overpowers the trouble caused by the cross. He says, Let me tell you about my father's house. In my father's house are many rooms. The Latin picked up mansions. But the idea is more of like it's not so much the lavishness of these dwelling places, but the sufficiency for all of us. And that's what he's talking about. In my father's house are many rooms. There's a place for you.

27That's how he begins to comfort. Them. In other places, heaven is described as a city or a country or even paradise. Here, it's home. Let me tell you about home. Let me tell you about where we're going. And what is home? Well, home brings a whole host of ideas to our mind, doesn't it? Home is a place. It's a real place. And notice here, I go to prepare a place. It is a place. But home is a place.

05It's a place of belonging. It's a place where you are welcomed. It's a stable place, a restful place. It's a place where there is abundant provision. It's a permanent place, right? All this comes to mind as we talk about home. It's the place where the family gathers. It's a place where we are loved for our own sake. That's what home's about. We just come home, regardless of what you see at school, no matter what kind of friends you make this semester, no matter what happens, you can always go back home, right? And you know that you're loved. You've got some parents or somebody who really cares. That's the idea of home and Jesus' concept of heaven.

57Jesus's home is his father's house. 1 Peter 1.1 speaks about us as sojourners, as aliens, as temporary residents. This isn't our home. It wasn't the disciples' home. And he says, Let me tell you, don't be troubled because you're going to heaven. And let me tell you about my father's house. Second, I want you to see the certainty of heaven, the certainty of heaven. Look in verse 2. In my father's house are many dwelling places. If it were not so, I would have told you.

42If it weren't that way, I would have told you such. But I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to myself. I love that. Look, let me tell you what's going on here. I am going. And he's announced to them that he is leaving. That's part of their trouble, right? They've followed him all these years. And now they've left everything. And they get up to Jerusalem. He says, by the way, I'm leaving you, and you can't follow me right now. Well, yeah, that's a reason to be what's going on. He says, let me tell you why I'm going. I'm going to prepare a place for you. And if it weren't this way, I would have told you. I'm telling you what it's about. Let the certainty of... Heaven find its root in the words of Jesus Himself.

37In my father's house are many rooms. There's plenty of rooms for all of you. And if it weren't so, I would have told you. And I go to prepare a place for you, and if I go to prepare a place for you, guess what? I am going to come again. See the logic here? If I'm going to prepare a place for you, and if I'm going to prepare a place for you, guess what's going to happen? I'm going to come back. I'm going to receive you to myself.

06I will come again. And notice, you don't really see this in the English because it translates, I will come again. It translates that as a future, but it's really a present. He says, I go, I am going, and guess what? I am coming again. In other words, my going has triggered my coming again. My going has triggered the preparation of the place for you, which is also in sequence of my coming again. The whole reason I came was to go so that I could come back, so that I could receive you to myself.

57Now I want you to say you. We looked at how Jesus described heaven. We looked at the certainty of heaven. Now I want you to see Jesus' excitement about heaven. Look back at verse 3. And if I go to prepare a place for you, I will come again. And, and now this is the future. I will receive you to myself, that where I am, there you may be also. I will come again and receive you. The term is actually a little stronger. I will seize you, I will take you into custody. And it's the idea of, I will receive you, I will take you in myself, I will receive you to myself, so that where I am, you shall be. So, the reason for Jesus' going is to prepare something. And he is excited to prepare something so that he can receive us into that which he has prepared.

07He is excited to show us his father's house. The foot washer that we see at the beginning of John 13 is now the master host. All it is an expression of his love for us. I can't wait to take you into my father's house so that you may. Take it in. I will receive you to myself that where I am, you may be also. I know many times I think y'all have experienced hospitality. I can remember the very first time, for instance, I went to go see Nancy up at her place in Minneapolis. And I remember being picked up at the airport by Bruce and Nancy, and they were very welcoming to me. They took me to their house, beautiful house on this kind of cabin on a lake. And there was Nancy's mom, who's now gone to be with the Lord. And as I walk through the sliding glass door into this little kitchen area, I see this big smile and this welcome. I hear the words, welcome, come in. And we got a place for you. Here's your place up here. And all this. They had thought about me coming. And they were ready to receive me. And they had thought through all of my needs for my stay. And they were receptive and welcoming. And they had thought through my coming. It's the same picture of heaven. Jesus says, I have thought through your stay, which happens to be eternity. I have thought through. Through it all, and I can't wait to receive you to myself, and that's the whole purpose for me coming, my going, my coming back again, so that I can receive you.

11And that's what excited him about going to the cross. Though it was awful, the reward on the other side was greater than the horror he would face. This is why showing hospitality is very important for us as a church to show hospitality to one another, not just because it's a good thing to do, but it represents or it reflects the very characteristic of our Lord who loves to host a master host. Interestingly enough, the only other place this word translated room is used is in a few verses later down in chapter 14 and verse 23. Jesus answered and said, If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my father will love him, and we will come to him and make our abode, that is, our home with him. And so our response to this incredible host who is going to host us in heaven, who has thought through our Dealing, or who's thought through our coming to heaven and receiving us there, our response to his hosting is to host him here now.

46Host him in our hearts. Give him room. This is what John the Baptist's whole message: make room for him. Believe him. Come into my life. Oh, let me clean up that room. Oh, let me clean up that one. Really? You come here. You are the master. You have place. You come. Let me host you now here. This is our opportunity to prepare a table for him in the presence of his enemies, starting with my own heart that is at enmity with him. Come, Lord Jesus, come.

19That's the right response to one that you're going to see one day saying, come into my father's house. Let me show you this whole thing. You see, when you trust him, when you believe in him, what you're doing is you're making room for him in your heart and not all the other philosophies and dispositions of unbelief that you are going to encounter. And when you deny his words, you deny him a place in your life. So let's get excited to welcome him.

57And not just on an individual level, As a church, as a corporate body, let us be a people. Come, Lord Jesus, you are welcome here. Let our corporate life totally reflect that He is welcome here. His words are welcome here, that He will be met with faith. And I pray, as you guys are, I know many of you will be looking around for churches and visiting around, and I pray the Lord will lead you to the right place. I want to encourage you to consider sojourning with us and being part of a family that corporately wants to identify with Christ in all of our corporate life together.

45So, three reasons why Jesus' disciples should never despair. Number one, we have a place reserved for us in heaven, and that doesn't ever change by whatever happens on earth. Second, we know the way to heaven. We know the way to heaven. And Jesus assured the disciples that they had a place reserved for them in heaven, no matter what they were about to see and face in Jerusalem. But, however, if they didn't know how to get there, what good is it? I mean, you may have tickets to a wonderful event. But if you punch in the wrong address into your GPS, you might end up in the wrong state or on some muddy road someplace. That's why you always got to look at that map, get a second opinion before you just dart off, says a man from learn from experience.

50But what good is it if you know that there is a place in heaven, but you have no idea how to get there? And the good news is that Jesus is declaring to them, you know the way. Look back at verse 4. And he expressly tells them this. And you know the way where I am going. You know it. Look what Thomas says. He disagrees, right? Thomas said to him, Lord, we do not know where you are going. So how do we know the way? In other words, we don't know where you are going. So how in the world would it be possible for us to know the way? You haven't even told us where you're going.

38Though he had. And look at Jesus' revelation here, this emphatic revelation. Jesus said to him, verse 6, I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father but through me. I mean, this is one of the most emphatic statements. In the New Testament, about the uniqueness of Christianity. And listen, all other religions are alike in this regard. They cannot bring anyone to the true God. And that's what Jesus is saying here: no one comes to the Father but through me.

24The mind of man has invented thousands of religions, thousands of theological systems, thousands of ways to God, and yet they are all ineffective in bringing a single person to him, at least to the true God. God we see revealed in Scripture. But in context, it's important to understand that Jesus is assuring his disciples, he's speaking these words not as a polemic, but as a way of comforting his disciples and about to face what they are about to see in Jerusalem.

03He's assuring his disciples that their faith is in the right person. Believe in me, no matter what you're about to see, you keep believing in me. No matter what troubled times are ahead, you keep believing in God and you keep believing in me. I am the right person to have faith in. And so Jesus basically was saying to Thomas and to the others, yes, you do know the way. You know me, and therefore you know the way.

43The one standing before you, I am the way, and you know me. Of course, they're still like, okay, how does all this work? Well, they're going to come to figure it out. But look at these three declarations of Jesus. Jesus says to him in verse 6, I am the way. Now, what is a way? What is this concept here? Well, a way is a means of connecting two points, right? Connecting A to B. A way is the means of doing that. Sometimes we can think of a way as a street that connects two parts of town, or maybe it's a door that connects two rooms, like this door here to my left. You're right, it's a way into what we call the living room, or it's a way you go from here into the other room through that door. That is what a way is.

38And when Jesus declared himself to be the way, he declared himself to be the means conveying his disciples into his father's presence. He is the means of conveying people from this world, this life, to the eternal world, eternal life, his father's house. The means. He is the only way that that happens. And that's his own words. You see, and Thomas did not grasp what Jesus had just said. Jesus did just tell him where he was going. Remember, in verse 2, what does he say? In my father's house are many dwelling places. If it was not so, I would have told you, for I go. Where is he going? To his father's house, to his father's presence. That's where he's going. I am going there. So, Thomas, you do know where I'm going. I just told you.

38And he told him why I'm going there. I'm going to prepare a place for you. So Jesus is the way to his father's abode and the only way. So we know the way to heaven. But Jesus goes on. He doesn't just stop there. Look at verse 6. He said to him, I am the way and the truth. The truth. I am the truth of God. I am the truth. Now, what is truth? It's a very important theme in the Gospel of John. What is truth? And who's going to ask that question? Pilate, right? Chapter 19. He says, so you're a king. Jesus answered, You say correctly that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world to testify to the truth. Everyone who Who is of the truth, hears my voice, Pilate said to him, What is truth? Truth. What is truth? Well, John wants us to understand what truth is. What is truth? Dear from a classical Greek background, some of the thoughts of truth that are constantly, or thoughts or concepts we associate with truth is truth versus falsehood, right? Something like propositional truth, the validity of an argument, truth. This is axiomatically true, propositionally true, or propositionally false. So we often think of truth in that context. Also, in other classical Greek sources, its emphasis may be the reality versus appearance. Something might be true. This is false. It appears to be this, but here's the reality.

26The idea of truth, and we understand that. Truth versus propositional truth. He certainly, everything he says is propositionally true, that he is the true reality. There's also a concept that you see in the scripture that's very closely associated with the idea of truth, and that is dependability. Something reliable, something you could build your life upon. Let me show you a picture. By the way, we had a wonderful wedding. Week. Thank you. It was very touching how many of you came out and just shared part of this special day with us. Married our first daughter off. And just thank you all for being part of that. And I know at one point my wife was moved to tears because of the generosity and the help that this church put forth to help us celebrate and be part of that. And what a great time it was. Now, something happened at the end. We decided we'd get a picture up here on this platform. And so whoever was left all piled up on this platform. And I know we've sometimes criticized Pat in the past for getting too many musicians on the platform. Pat, you've got a lot more room because I counted someplace, somewhere close to 100 people upon it. And look at everybody's raising their hand. You know why they're raising their hands and smiling? It's not because they're Pentecostal.

05You want me to tell you? They're very happy that the platform is holding up. It holds up! Actually, no, that's why I'm smiling, is that it's holding them up. I'm sitting there watching all these people pile on the platform, and the thing goes in my mind: the engineer never designed this many people to be on this platform. But you know what we have on this platform? We have a true platform. Platform. It is dependable. You can put everybody up here that can get up here, and it's going to hold up.

39And that's enlarged what Jesus is saying here. You can put your faith and trust in me as the only way to heaven. I will convey you into my Father's house. I am the true way, the reliable way, the dependable way. Put your trust in me, and you will not be disappointed. That's the truth. I am the ultimate reality of God. And you can put your life in my hands. So, truth, and it's interesting, truth in John's gospel is something that is in Jesus. It is in Jesus.

27In the beginning was a word, and the word was with God, and the word was God. Verse 14, and the word became flesh and dwelt among us. We saw his glory. Glory is the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. Truth is something that is characteristic of Jesus. Jesus isn't just merely standing in the way of truth. Like, here's this principle of truth. And by the way, Jesus is in agreement with it. No, it's the other way around. Truth is in Christ.

56And he says, I am truth. Truth is connected to the character of God Himself, the ultimate reality. A creature could never be the ultimate reality, but God is the ultimate reality, and because God is, everything else emanates from Him. He's true. Because He is, truth is. And so He says, I am the way, truth, life. And Jesus isn't just saying, I am the true way, He's saying something more than that. He is, I am the embodiment of truth, and therefore the way that I am is absolutely reliable.

57And heaven is the ultimate reality for Jesus' people because Jesus is the ultimate expression of God. He will convey his people to heaven. And that's why Jesus' disciples should never despair. We know the way to heaven. But he goes on, adds another dimension to this. Look at verse 6. I am the way, the truth, and the life. Life is also a major. Theme in John's Gospel. Not only does truth emanate from the word made flesh, so does life itself. Spend a lot of time reading John 1, but this is what the whole gospel begins. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him. That's us as well. Everything you see. He is the life giver. Life comes from him. All things came into being through him. And apart from him, nothing came into being that has come into being. In him was life, and the life was the light of men.

04And though he came to his own, his own did not receive him. But as many as did receive him, verse 12, to them he gave the right to become children of God. Verse 13, who were born not of the blood, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor the will of man, but of God. You see, much of the disciples' life was figuring out who this individual was who was before them. At one time in Mark chapter 4, they're on the boat. Jesus is asleep. And this storm comes up, and they get afraid. And Jesus gets up and he says, he rebukes the wind and the wave, and everything becomes calm. And then Jesus says to them in verse 40, Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith? You see, troubled souls, despair, depression.

00Comes out of a lack of faith. Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith? They become very much afraid then and said to one another, Who is this? Who is this? That even the wind and the waves obey him? So much of their life is understanding who is this? Who is this? Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. You see, sin has sentenced humanity to a spiritual state of lifelessness. Man, you and I, in our natural state, unless we've come to Christ and been born of Christ, we are cold and we are indifferent to the things of God. They have no interest.

46They don't mean anything to us. We're dead to them. We're indifferent to them. That's the spiritual state of lifelessness. And Jesus is declaring himself to not only be the mediator of God's truth, I am truth, he is also the mediator of life. And he gives life, God's life. And so he is the way, the truth, and the life, sole mediator between man and God. And this is when he tells his disciples to have faith in him. He's saying, this is the content that you need. Here's the content of your faith. I am the way.

30I am the ultimate expression of reality, and I am the very life giver himself. So, whatever you see in Jerusalem, keep those things in mind because you're going to see something very, very different that's going to challenge you to believe the very opposite of what I just told you. Number three: three reasons why Jesus' disciples should never despair. Number one, we have a place reserved for us in heaven. Number two, we know the way to heaven. Number three, we understand our heavenly Father. We understand our heavenly Father. Look at what Jesus says: If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on, you know him and have seen him. I'm going to spend a little more time on this next week.

32But Jesus is saying, Look, to know Jesus is to know the heavenly Father. To see Jesus is to see the heavenly Father. Though they are distinct, yet they are, their union is described between the Father and the Son as so homogeneous that to see the one is to see the other. And this is what John says in verse chapter 1 and 18: No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten God who is in the bosom of the Father, he has seen the same. Explained him. He has exegeted him to us. He has narrated. Jesus is the one who narrates God. He's the one who discloses God. And as we look at Christ and understand Christ, we understand our Heavenly Father.

15No one has ever made a claim like this. To see me is to see the Heavenly Father. And so there's more to say on this, and I'll look at this next time. But I want you to dial in on this expression from now on. From now on, you know him. You have seen him. And I believe what Jesus is emphasizing here is his pending crucifixion, his pending burial, resurrection, and everything beyond. The disciples were about to see something extremely horrible that would contradict or seemingly contradict everything that Jesus said. And Jesus is saying, before you see all this, I want you to believe in God and believe in me and do not let your heart be troubled. And they're going to see something so troubling that it will blow the mind.

15Sometimes I think we think it might have been easier if we were a disciple and that we wouldn't have to have faith because we would have had sight, we would have been able to believe. No, they were called to faith. They were really called to faith. They had to exercise faith. Now, consider the occasion on which Jesus commanded them to have faith in him. They were about to go into Jerusalem, and they were going to witness what appeared to be the overwhelming triumph of evil to the point where Peter would even deny ever even knowing the one he claimed to love so dearly.

59No, the Roman crucifixion was specifically designed to tell people not to follow that way. They made a big production to make sure that people wouldn't go the way that the crucified went. This is a public example of the way not to go. So everything that was geared in a Roman crucifixion was to shout out, this is not the way, don't follow him, he's not the right way. And yet, Jesus said, believe me, this is the way.

35It's the way of the cross. The way into heaven is through the crucified Christ. Temple, veil, torn in two. This is the way. Of all the millions of sacrifices that have ever happened in the temple, none of them caused a temple to be. The veil to be rent. I know I'm the way. You're going to see it. You're going to see it. You're going to be in this society. You're going to go into this world and you're going to hear all over, he's not the way, he's not the way. Don't follow him. Jesus says, I am the way. Trust me, follow me.

17But also, the whole Jewish establishment, they're about to go in. The Jewish establishment emphatically declared Jesus as a blasphemer, one who perverts the truth, one who is not in the truth. So here's the whole Roman world saying, Don't follow him, he's not leading you in the right way. Here is the whole Jewish establishment saying, He is not in the truth. And yet, here's Jesus: Have faith in me. I am the truth. This is the only means to get you into my Father's house.

55And third, when the disciples watched him being placed in the tomb, the carcass of a man, you know what Jesus called him to believe? Believe that I am the life. You see a man being laid into a tomb, but I tell you, I am the life. That is why he came out of that grave. Because he is the life. You see, we live in a society that says Jesus is not the way, not the truth, not the life. And the question comes to our doorstep today: who are you going to believe?

45You see, heaven puts everything into perspective, doesn't it? Jesus gave his disciples a context to understand and interpret the crucifixion and the resurrection and everything that was going to take place in the context as I am the way, the truth, and the life. Do not be troubled. All this is going to take place, but there is an ultimate reality that makes sense to all of this, and that is, I am conveying you to heaven, to my father's house, and I cannot wait to get you there.

23The Bible is very clear of what the future of unbelievers is going to be. And let me tell you what's going to happen. If you do not believe that Jesus, or you do not believe in God through the lens of Jesus, if you do not let Jesus narrate God for you, you know what's going to happen when you step into his presence? You're going to flee. Your own conscience will overwhelm you. It will strike terror in you, panic and fear, flight. Why flight?

57Why? Because you will be worried. Of your sin. You'll be aware of the holiness, the presence, the holy congregation, and you will not have anything. You will be embarrassed. You will try to deny, but then standing in that light, there will be no more denying it. So there's only one way out, and that is to flee. But let me tell you something about the future of believers. When they see Christ revealed, they are drawn. They are drawn with a strength and a pull that is the exact opposite and more so than those who flee. And why is that? Because they know their sins have been done away with.

48And they know that Christ took them away. That is why, even now, in the presence of God, he is understood as a lamb who was crucified, looking like he was slain. And so when we step into eternity, we are gratefully and joyfully drawn to the one who removed our shame. Where is he? I want to go to him. With everything in me, I am drawn to him. I am grateful to him. I want to worship him and I want to spend an eternity giving thanks to him.

26Two trajectories in life, two very different futures. And all of it is based on what or who you believe in. Heaven is just another expression of his love for us. Will you respond to his love today by gratefully acknowledging it and by gratefully receiving it? By believing in him. Let's pray. Heavenly Father, we do just thank you for this, the overwhelming beauty, the overwhelming glory of Christ who loves us, came for us, went through the cross and the grave to enter into your presence to prepare a place for us.

31Thank you. That we can look forward with complete assurance that indeed you are going to come again, you are going to resurrect these lifeless bodies, that you are going to take all of us together to explore your Father's house. We just thank you for all of this. Help us now to make room for you in our hearts. Forgive us of our sins. Have your way with us. Come, holy. Holy Spirit.
