3:14And the heads of the horses are like the heads of lions, and out of their mouths proceed fire and smoke and brimstone. A third of mankind was killed by these three plagues, by the fire and the smoke and the brimstone, which proceeded out of their mouths. For the power of the horses is in their mouths and in their tails. For their tails are like serpents and have heads, and with them they do harm. The rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands, so as not to worship demons, and the idols of gold and of silver and of brass and of stone and of wood, which can neither see nor hear nor walk. And they did not repent of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their immorality, nor of their thefts.

4:15Well, there it is. I want to speak to you today about the foolishness of serving Satan. I think we'd all say it's foolish to serve him. And I think all of us would say, well, I don't really bow to. Down and have an altar to Satan and serve him. Yet many of us do serve him more than we know. We bow down to him more than we realize. And so, what I want to do this morning is talk to you about the foolishness of serving him.

4:51You see, God has an adversary, his name is Satan. In fact, the name Satan means adversary. God has an adversary. And since you and I are made in God's image, guess what? We have an adversary too, the very same one. You see, Satan has no love for humanity. And yet, most of humanity loves him. He leads us to our own destruction. That's where he takes us. He doesn't love God. He hates God. He hates the image-bearers of God.

5:37And he leads the image-bearers of God to their destruction. He wants them annihilated. He wants them gone. In fact, we even know it. And yet, we continue to serve him. Your fits of anger, your substance use. And abuse, your sexual vice, and whatever kind of sin you want to fill in the blank with, it has an ultimate end, and that is your destruction. He lures us, he tempts us. And when you give in to temptation, you are giving in to him, and you are giving reins of control over to him. And his purpose is destruction. There is no love for you. Be sure of that.

6:33And yet we continue to serve him. I am, think about Old Testament inspiration. I love this one: Proverbs 26:11. Like a dog that returns to his vomit, is a fool who repeats his folly. Think about the inspiration. I think about how this, how God inspired this. I love how he inspires Scripture. Well, I can picture this Hebrew sage out there one morning enjoying the sunset or sunrise, and here comes this dog, vomits. And then a few minutes later, here comes this dog back to that same place. Chomp, chomp, chomp. I can see this Hebrew sage just get up. That's it. Game over. I'm going inside.

7:25Like a dog returns to his vomit. Don't you realize, dog, that you threw it up the first time? Time? Don't you understand that it made you sick the first time? Why in the world do you think it's going to be any better the second time? And so the proverb says, you know what? This is like the fool. The fool doesn't learn from his folly. The fool goes back to that which destroys him and that which harms him. It is foolish to love and to serve that which destroys you. It is foolishness to serve Satan. Why would you keep doing the things that destroy you? It's foolishness. But there is a much deeper spiritual reason. Why?

8:17Because people ultimately are worshiping demons rather than the true God. It's a worship issue. When you follow the dictates of your heart, you are serving God's adversary and your adversary. And there is no love for you under his jurisdiction. Well, we've looked at the first four trumpets already. Remember, we're now in that opening of the scroll. The scroll is being opened up. There are trumpets. Remember, there was, they The first four trumpets show us just how futile it is to oppose God. God is the creator of the world. He is the creator of you and me. He created the environment on which it is necessary for us to have our existence. We are dependent upon Him. And so these first four trumpets that blow destroy much of Earth's ecosystem. They don't, they partially destroy it as a warning. He could destroy it all, but His goal is to bring people to repentance as judgment is unfolding.

9:40But it is very much futile. You'll briefly remember. You remember the first trumpet was a judgment against Earth's vegetation. The second trumpet was a judgment against the sea. God is Lord over the sea, sea creatures. Third trumpet, you have this star that impacts the fresh waters of earth. And in the fourth trumpet, you have a darkening of the sun, a third of it, and the moon, and all the related lights. And so you get very quickly the Lord is doing something in the cosmos, on the earth. He's building that siege, if you will, to bring people to a point of recognizing who He is and bringing them to surrender.

10:32Well, what we will do now, we shift from the ecosystem. Now, the trumpets five and six are going to be against the inhabitants. The inhabitants. So, we looked at four trumpets already. Three more trumpets are to come, and we're going to open or blow. We're going to hear the sounding of the next two trumpets in the series, five and six. That's what chapter nine is about. But this morning, I want us to recognize that what we're looking at in Revelation chapter 9 is what God is doing is he is simply releasing the demonic forces upon humanity.

11:24These are not his forces, these are the satanic forces. And I want you to see what they do to humanity so that you will see that it is foolish to serve Satan, so that you will turn to God with all your heart in every category of your being to the fullest extent to serve him, serve him only, get rid of every vestige of sympathy to your own ways, and turn to him. Turn to God fully. It's foolish to serve Satan, and yet that is what many of us persist in doing.

12:10First of all, it's evident that Satan loves to torment people. See this in the first 12 verses in the blowing of the fifth trumpet, or the first woe, woe number one. Look at verse one. Then the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star from heaven, star from heaven, which had fallen to the earth. And the key of the bottomless pit was given to him. He opened the bottomless pit, and smoke went up out of the pit like the smoke of a great furnace, and the sun and the air were darkened by the smoke of the pit. A star. Here, this is clear. We're talking about an intelligent being, talking about a person who is given a key, who is able to go open the bottomless pit.

13:06I'm not going to get hung up on who this figure is. It could either be Satan, or it could be another demon that has fallen, or the verb would even allow it to be an unfallen angel that is commissioned, who is descended to open the pit. It doesn't really change. What's clear here is that the key is given to him. Permission to this being is granted by virtue of the key to go open up this abyss, this bottomless pit. What is this bottomless pit? Well, it's really a word for a cavern, a large cavern, abyss. But in this context, it is speaking about the imprisoned realm of the demonic underworld. In fact, we read about this in 1 Peter 3, about these spirits that in verse 19 were in prison, who were once disobedient during the days of Noah. Jude, verse 6, speaks of angels who did not keep their own domain, but abandoned their proper abode. God is kept in eternal bonds under the darkness for the judgment of the great day. Just as Sodom and Gomorrah, the cities around them, since they in the same way as these indulge in gross immorality and went after strange flesh, are exhibited as an example in undergoing the punishment of that eternal fire. So you have this reality of an underworld, demons, for whatever reason, who have been bound and so that they would not wreak any more havoc. Upon humanity. They are bound. God has bound them for a reason. But here, they are released. And so you have this graphic scene. Smoke goes up like a great furnace. Even the sun and the air are darkened. And so you have this demonic army released.

15:26And then beginning in chapter 3, I'm sorry, in verse 3, you have this demonic army described. Look back. Let's get their power. In verse 3. Then out of the smoke came locusts upon the earth, and power was given to them as the scorpions of the earth have power. So from this huge smoke, this great smoke, this locust swarm appears, but they appear to be locusts. They're really demons. And the power of scorpions is in their ability to harm. But notice their limitation.

16:12They are dependent upon power given to them. They can only harm. Verse 4, they were told not to hurt the grass of the earth, nor any green thing, nor any tree. But only the men who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads. Now, if you're a real locust, you're going to go, bummer. What is locust like? What's another name for locusts? A grasshopper. What are grasshoppers like? Everything green, grass. They love that. So now you're like, these aren't ordinary locusts or grasshoppers. They liked to harm people. But there's a limitation. They can only harm people without the seal of God. You remember God sealed his own. And now these demonic forces are coming out. They can't touch them.

17:14So who does this leave? I'll come back to that question in a moment. But the extent of their ability to harm is seen in the next verse. Look at verse 5. And they were not permitted to kill anyone, but to torment for five months. And their torment was like the torment of a scorpion when it stings a man. So they can't kill. They can only torment. And they've got five months. They've got five months to do it.

17:46But now, if you, they can't eat the grass, can't destroy the grass, they can't harm the people with the seal upon their head, they can't harm God's people whose Left Satan's people, their own kind. Do you see that? There's only one kind of people that they can torment, and that's those who serve the same master that they serve. Don't you find that ironic, troubling? No, there's no love. Demons have no love for humanity that serve their king.

18:30That's why it's foolish to serve Satan. But the torment is very strong. Look at verse 6. And in those days, men will seek death and will find it, and they will long to die, and death flees from them. Torment will be so intense that people would prefer death. But these are demons doing it to their own comrades. Oh, they hate the image of God that much. But look at their appearance. He goes on in verse 7. The appearance of the locusts was like horses prepared for battle, and on their heads appeared to be crowns like gold, and their faces like the faces of men. They had hair like the hair of women, and their teeth were like the teeth of lions. They had breastplates like breastplates of iron, and the sound of their wings was like. The sound of chariots of many horses rushing to battle. What a description. These are not pretty creatures. And in case you're having trouble visualizing this, here's one artist's rendition. You can see a cross between a scorpion and a grasshopper with the face of a man, hair of a woman, and all that crown of gold. You see all that. This is what they look like. Or one artist's version. Now, keep in mind, this is a visual. This is what John is seeing, and it's describing a demonic force, a demonic army that is sent to terrorize. And how that plays out is just the physical pain is probably part of it.

20:27But there is a depth to this that is difficult to understand. But satanic torment, the lash of a guilty conscience, the lash what Satan can throw against you. You saw this with the man in Mark 4, Mark 5, the demoniac, and how Satan treated him. It's like, well, this is one of your own. Why do you do this to one of your own? Because they don't see humanity as one of their own. They hate the image-bearers of God. Satan does.

21:14What a description. Verse 10, they have tails like scorpions and stings, and in their tails is their power to hurt men for five months. Five months. They're limited. There is a greater authority. If they had their way, they would go on and on and on. But there's a limit. Then, beginning in verse 11, John describes their king. They have as a king over them the angel of the abyss. His name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in the Greek, he has the name Apollyon. The name Apollyon means destruction. So it's like destruction personified.

22:06His name is Destroyer. He is destroyer. Their king is destroyer. And he is the king over this demonic realm of this abyss. I don't believe this is a reference to Satan himself in I think this is some high-ranking satanic being, general, who is over the forces in this abyss. He is a supreme demonic being bent that certainly images and reflects Satan's desire to destroy. His very name means destruction, but he is king of the realm. Now, in Bunyan's Pilgrim Progress, as many of you should be very familiar with around here, this is where Bunyan gets the name Apollyon to attribute it to the prince of the city of destruction. And his destroyer, let me tell you who is the prince of the city of destruction. Destroyer. He, the man we call destroyer, the the angel we call destroyer, he is the prince of the city of destruction. You see the connection that and he is in pilgrim's progress, really the reflection, the entity, the satanic entity. But in context, the Apollyon is probably this satanic general over these forces. And when they are released, these locusts, demonic army, obey him. And he is the destroyer, and he sends them out to do to destroy.

24:03But just even as this episode, we look back at verse 6, and I just want you to think for just a moment that the foolishness of humanity that's being depicted here. Verse 6, and in those days, in those five months, men will seek death and will not find it. They will long to die, and death flees from them. You would think maybe during that time, if they had any kind of sense of turning to God at all, they would say, I recognize there are some people that are not being stung. Maybe I should find out why. But instead of seeking the God of the universe, they would seek death. They would rather die than repent.

24:52Getting a picture into what an obstinate heart looks like. Yes, these events speak about something future, but there is an application to us today that we need to make sure we get, regardless of when this happens, it is depicting something about an obstinate heart, and you don't want to have that one. It is foolish to serve Satan. There is no love toward you, I can assure you. What kind of creature just likes to torment people? Someone who hates God.

25:33These would rather die than repent. Like a dog that returns to its vomit, is the fool who repeats his folly. So they don't repent. After five months, God calls them. These demonic forces out, moves them along. People do not repent, so God continues his judgment upon them. Look at verse 12. The first woe is past. Behold, two woes are still coming after these things. See, Satan loves to torment people, but Satan loves to do more. He loves to kill people. And this is what we'll see with the blowing of the sixth trumpet, woe number two.

26:28If before we saw a demonic army, the sixth trumpet shows us a demonic cavalry. Look at verse 13. Then the sixth angel sounded, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God, one saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, release the four angels who are bound. At the great river Euphrates. The voice coming from the altar is no doubt God's voice from the horns of the altar. This is the place where the previously we've seen the martyrs crying out, the additional prayers being offered up, certainly in response to these prayers. The angel is clearly the angel who blew the trumpet, the four angels. These are very powerful demons. These are not unfallen angels. Unfallen angels are not spoken of as bound or incarcerated or chained. This is language of demonic forces.

27:51And it's very clear that these angels have an insatiable desire to kill humanity. I would call these another round of these demonic powerhouse generals. Four angels bound there, the river Euphrates. And the command, the voice, says, release. Let them go. Let them do what's in their heart. Let them free. Set them free. And so, verse 15. And the four angels who had been prepared for the hour and day and month and year were released so that they would kill a third of mankind. It was in their heart. This is who they were. God bound them because of that. God is not the author, but he uses sin for his purposes to glorify himself. Here, he incarcerates these angels, these fallen angels, these beings, and he has incarcerated them and bound them for a very specific time in human history. You still see the control of God in all this. He is Lord. And he's teaching the world something.

29:21They went to kill. And the four angels who had been prepared for the hour and the day, the month were released so that they would kill a third of mankind. The number, look at verse 16. The number of the armies of the horsemen was 200 million. I heard the number of them. So he's not guesstimating. That's a word. He's not guessing. He's, I heard this number. And a double myriad of myriads. A double myriad of myriads, which would do the math, 200 million.

30:00And so he sees these four angels, and all of a sudden these four become 200 million. Four angels become this cavalry of 200 million. Horsemen on their horses. That's what a cavalry is. So they seem to be these generals. And these forces that are going to be described are these demonic forces. So if you took the four and you took the 200 million and you equally distributed them, then you have these four angelic beings or demonic generals would have something like 50 million demonic horsemen and horses behind them. That's the force. This is the demonic cavalry that's being released. And then he goes on to describe this demonic cavalry. Look at verse 17. And this is how I saw in the vision of the horses and those who sat on them. The riders had breastplates the color of fire and hyacinth and of brimstone. So in verse 17, first he starts describing the riders, and he describes them by color. Red, fire. Hyacinth is like blue.

31:30It's a blue that actually, it's a deep blue that is the color of the flame that burns sulfur or brimstone associated with sulfur. So you've got this, those of you who have seen some of the sulfur balls that have burned Sodom and Gomorrah, that's what they look like. Fire, this red, this blue flame, this melting blob. Well, that's kind of how he describes these riders. They look like blobs of burning sulfur, the colors of burning sulfur that rained down on Sodom and Gomorrah.

32:19But next, notice the greater attention is given to the horses. Picking up in verse 17, he shifts the next few verses to the horses. And the heads of the horses are like the heads of a lion, of lions. And out of their mouths proceed fire and smoke and brimstone. And a third of mankind was killed by these three plagues, by the fire, the smoke, and the brimstone, which proceeded out of their mouths. For the power of the horses is in their mouths and in their tails, for their tails are like serpents. And they have heads, and with them they do harm. So they have heads of lion out of their mouths. Their power to harm comes out of their mouth. Fire, smoke, brimstone, three plagues are described by the fire, smoke, and brimstone. They have the ability to torment, and it's in their tails. And it's like their tails are like serpents, and they have heads, and they are able to harm. Well, in case that didn't hit you, here's an artist's rendition of this demonic cavalry.

33:32But one thing is clear about this demonic cavalry and these horses or horsemen, they are clearly man-killers. About a quarter of Earth's population was killed under seal number four. You remember the green horse? That population. And that was pretty much man's doing. Wars against war, that's man and that kind of thing. This becomes a very demonic chapter. This is the demonic forces being released to do what's in their heart. God has kept them bound so that they wouldn't do this. And now he lets them loose so humanity will see the nature of the one they're serving.

34:18There is no love. Again, why would they do this to their own? Why would these demons do this? To those who are serving Satan and worshiping them. Why would they do this to their own worshipers? They hate the image of God. You and I bear that image. There is no love. There never will be love. That is why it is completely foolish to serve Satan in the demonic realm. That is why it is foolish for you to go your own way. That is why it is wise to turn, show wisdom, turn your heart, incline your heart to God.

35:08Well, the satanic locusts torment, the demonic cavalry kills. They have an insatiable lust for tormenting and killing those who are made in the image of God. That's Satan, and that's all of his forces. The same was true in Jesus' day. Jesus said to the religious leaders of his day: Here's the one who perfectly embodies God Himself. He's come, He's done good deeds, He has spoken the truth, and yet there are all these people dressed in religious clothes that are opposing Him and seek. To murder him. And Jesus said this in John 8:42, If God were your father, you would love me. For I proceeded forth and have come from God. For I have not even come on my own initiative, but he sent me. Why do you not understand what I am saying? It is because you cannot hear my word. Why can't you hear my word? You are of your father, the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father.

36:36That's why you can't hear. You're of your father, the devil. He was a murderer from the very beginning. As long as you want to do the desires of the devil, you will not be able to hear God. He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature. For he is a liar and the father of lies. But because I speak the truth, you do not believe me.

37:07Here's the Son of God in the flesh. Here are the religious leaders of his day. And he is saying, You're wanting to do the desires of your father, the devil. He was a murderer from the very beginning. And that's exactly what you're wanting to do to me. And boy, did they. When Christ was handed over to them, they wanted to torment him and they wanted to murder him, didn't they? And these were religious leaders. And yet, from the outside, they looked great.

37:52And yet, they served Satan. They did the desires of their real father. That's who we're. So, who are you born of? Well, you'll do the desires. You do the desires of your father. Who are you born of? But the question becomes, after looking at all this, who in the world would want to serve demons? You would think by this time, absolutely nobody. The world would get it. After all these horrible events, you'd think that man would want to turn away from their tormentors, turn to God who has mercy upon them.

38:39But they don't. Satan loves to torment people. Satan loves to kill people. And only fools continue to serve him. Look back at the text. Look at what happens. Verse 20. The rest of mankind who were not killed by these plagues did. Not repent of the works of their hands, so as not to worship demons, and the idols of gold and of silver and of brass and of stone and of wood, which can neither see nor hear nor walk.

39:16Word for plagues, the ones who were not killed by these blows or these strikes or these plagues, the ones who were not killed by these, they didn't repent. They didn't turn away from the works of their hands. They felt no remorse. There was no change of heart. All the things that they had seen about the futility of opposing God and the insanity of serving Satan, what do they continue to do? They keep worshiping demons. These are the forces that just wreaked all this havoc on them, and yet they will not turn away. There's a lot of deception going on there.

40:05But there's a pattern of no repentance. They continue to, and they purpose to continue, to fall down in obedience to the very demons that have inflicted all this upon them. We get this picture of this unrepentant heart way back. This is not new. We see this in Pharaoh. He had an obstinate heart, and we're looking again at a world of this same obstinate heart on widespread deep wickedness of a hardened heart. This is why we don't want this to be us.

40:45But you remember after the frogs, the plague of the frogs, the plague of the lice, the plague of the hail, all this, whenever there was a little bit of relief, Exodus 8.15 gives us a window into this. But when Pharaoh saw that there was relief, he hardened his heart and did not listen. And even when it was evident that the God of the universe was greater than all other gods, Pharaoh still would not listen. His own people said, his own magician said, this is the finger of God. In Exodus 8, 19, and Pharaoh's heart was hardened, and he did not listen. Even when God made a clear distinction between Egypt and Israel in their livestock, one day all of the Egyptian livestock get pummeled, but not a single one of Israel. Exodus 9:7, Pharaoh said, and behold, there was not even one of the livestock of Israel dead, but the heart of Pharaoh was hardened.

41:54You see, the locusts should have made a distinction, should have brought to the people's attention. A distinction. But what's happening here? As Pharaoh is hardening his heart, God's saying, Okay, good, you want to be hardened? Fine. I will let you harden. I will harden. It will become hardened. And in Exodus 10:1, the Lord says this to Moses: He says, Go to Pharaoh, for I have hardened his heart and the heart of his servants that I may perform these signs of mine against them. Okay, you want to be an object of wrath? Fine. Go your own way. Your heart will be crystallized in opposition to him.

42:43And so it was in Pharaoh's hardened heart in Exodus 14 that he led his whole army, military, to follow the people of Israel. And God drowned them in the sea. Consider the words for just a moment of Psalm 92:6. Listen to these words. A senseless man has no knowledge, nor does a stupid man understand this: that when the wicked sprouted up like grass, and all who did iniquity flourished, it was only that they might be destroyed forevermore. Humanity is going to go down one of two roads: to be an object of his wrath. Grace or an object of his wrath to show what is good and to show what is not good.

43:43But I want to make a few observations here quickly about idols. Idols are tools. They are weapons of war used by demons to torment and destroy humanity. It's interesting in this passage in verse 20, they're lifeless, and yet the powers behind them are demons. They cannot see, they cannot walk, and yet they're completely powerless, and yet behind them are these celestial forces of terrifying evil. They're like portals, these idols, portals into demonic control and torment. Yeah, we idolatry in our society is not as obvious as it was in the day that this was written to those churches in Asia Minor that have idols everywhere, lifeless, yet behind them are terrifying demonic powers. And yet today, idolatry is just as much. Real as it was in John's day. I'll tell you what idolatry is: idolatry is turning any earthly thing into a God and worshiping it rather than the God of creation. That's what idolatry is. And whenever whatever you place ahead of God in your life is an idol, whether it's a person, whether it's a relationship, whether it's money, whether it's possession, whether it's some kind of power, pursuit, success, whether it's sexual vice, whether it's drugs, whether it's whatever it is.

45:33It can very be these very things that have tortured and killed people in the past. And we've seen this. It's a mystery. Why does the drunkard keep going back? Why does the addict keep destroying himself, even though he knows what he's doing is destroying himself? There is a demonic connection behind all of this, it is deeply spiritual. They did not repent. They wanted to continue to worship these demons. Look at verse 21. And they did not repent of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their immorality, nor of their thefts.

46:20You see, idols are the means to worship demons, and the allurements that the demons use are our own fleshly lusts. They entice. Why would anybody want to serve an idol? Because an idol gives you what you want. So they did not repent of their murders. They did not repent of their sorceries, literally their pharmaceuticals, their magic potions, their sorceries, their drugs, their mind-altering chemicals. They did not repent of their murders. They did not repent of their sorceries. They did not repent of their immorality, their sexual deviancies. They didn't repent or turn away from that. It changed nothing about their trajectory. They did not stop stealing. They didn't turn away, have a change of heart about their thefts. All of this is just an indication of what an obstinate heart looks like.

47:30And this is just even as we think about this in our own times. There's a deeply profound theological message for us here today, regardless of when this happens in the future or in the past. I see it in the future. But the entire desire of the fallen angels is to torture and to kill you and everyone else who bears the. The image of God. And yet, there's the great sadness in all this is that depraved humanity is so ensnared and so deceived that we keep going after that which destroys us.

48:23Like a dog going back to its vomit. And what Revelation is doing is it's preparing us for the great white throne judgment. Why will people go there? Why will people end up in the lake of fire? Why will all the demons end up in the lake of fire ultimately? Because of this crystallized, hardened heart. That's why. So Revelation is preparing us. But here, as we think about this, God is supreme. Seen that in our texts? Demons hate people.

49:06And people prefer to serve demons. Let that not be us. It's foolish to serve that which destroys you. Proverbs 26, 11, like a dog that returns to its vomit is a fool who Repeats his folly. Don't keep serving that which destroys you. Listen to the words that I'm saying to you today. Do not continue to serve that which will destroy you, destroy your marriage, destroy your relationships with your children, destroy, destroy, destroy. Don't keep going down that road. Turn from that which destroys. Turn to him who builds. You have an invitation to come to Christ today. John 10:10, Jesus says this: The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have a life and have it abundantly. I am the good shepherd, and the good shepherd lays down his life for his sheep. That's the glorious invitation to you here. Turn to your good shepherd. He will abundantly pardon and wholeheartedly welcome you. Say in your heart right now, say, Lord, help me. I turn to you. Come into my life. And he will like that.

50:44That's proud. Heavenly Father, we do bow our hearts before you, recognizing the foolishness it is to serve that which destroys us. And yet we see the will. Of taking you up on your call. You created us. It's futile for us to oppose you. It's foolish for us to serve your adversary and those who hate us. So, Father, we turn to you. Give us wisdom this morning. By your Spirit, open our eyes, open our minds, give us new hearts to the end that you may be glorified. To the end that we all here today would be in a right relationship with you.
