Graceful Living in a Disgraceful Time - Titus 2:11-14

1:35Here's what she told millions of people: I quote: I made the decision that was best for me to have an abortion, to get compassionate care at a clinic in my own community. It was her best decision to end the life of this precious child. And that wasn't so disturbing as the loud applause that came after the statement from the crowd as millions of people watched. Is that a sin that God doesn't forgive? Most certainly He does forgive. And perhaps you've participated in something like that, and as we're going to learn today, that grace is sufficient and God forgives.

2:19That was a Democrat. Democrat, sorry. Boy, that wouldn't happen to a Republican. Sorry. Thanks for correcting me. Last month, as you well know, the Dallas police were out defending the rights of our citizens in our country to protest even the police. And a sniper cut down one of them, even as he protected them. President Obama sent out a mandate that all girls have to allow the boys to use their bathrooms in our government schools. Javier Chavez, senior detective with Macy's Department Store, maybe you've heard about him. Just recently, there was a mother-daughter who was carrying on crying coming out of the women's bathroom at Macy's, scared to death because there was a man in the restroom. Javier Chavez had been with Macy's as their senior detective for 26 years, and his men went in and confronted this man in the women's restroom. And Javier was fired from his job because he wanted to protect these women.

3:29Are we the only ones shaking our heads, going, What on earth is going on here? You look at the title of today's message: Graceful Living in Disgraceful Times. How do we function in this new environment? This is a new culture for us. Younger people, we have not experienced this in our lifetimes, and yet you're going to live through it far longer than we will. How can we serve Christ when the world around us despises us so much? When they despise Christ, they despise us. They don't want what we say. And so leaders like Putin silence the church, and so he thinks.

4:11Can't he figure out church history, look back 2,000 years? Can't he figure it out that you don't silence God's people? It won't end well for him. As believers in this new culture, how shall we live, move, and have our being? When the world is going to hell in a handbasket, I lay up at night and I think about these things. And I pray for you. At the end of the service, I'm going to ask you to pray for your pastors regularly. We need your prayers, it's going to get hard. Titus chapter 2, verses 11 through 14, holds the answer to the question: how do we gracefully live in disgraceful times?

5:08Would you follow along with me as I read that section of Scripture? And I thought I have myself open to it, and I don't, so hold on just a second. Titus chapter 2, verses 11 through 14, we read these words from the pen of Paul. For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires, to live sensibly, righteously, and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus, who gave himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed and to purify for himself a people for his own possession, zealous for good deeds.

6:07That's the answer to our question. How do we live gracefully in a disgraceful world in disgraceful times? And I want you to see that we're going to cover some ground here. As a believer, you need to understand really three truths that will help you to live graciously in this age. It's very simple. Salvation's cause, salvation's response, and then again, salvation's purpose. So there's three areas that we want to focus on tonight. I'm going to keep this slide on until the end because I don't want you to lose track of where I'm going. But we're going to talk about the first one, salvation's cause. We just read it in verse 11. Let me just look at it one more time so we're highly attuned to what we're addressing in this particular point. I want you to focus in on this. He says, for the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men. What do you think about when you think about the word grace? Is there a favorite Bible passage that you can think of when we hear about grace and salvation tucked in together? Perhaps your mind goes directly to Ephesians chapter 2, verses 5 and 8. You don't have to turn there. Most know it by heart. If you don't, read it, but it's essentially this: salvation is by grace through faith. It's a gift from God. It doesn't come as a result of works. So he's talking about grace here. He says, the grace of God has appeared. The grace of God showed up. The grace of God is what we see, meaning it showed up when we saw it take action.

7:46And I bet you, if I were to ask you individually, can you tell me about the first time in your life that the grace of God showed up in your life? Can you remember it? Can you remember that time when somebody told you about Christ and maybe you rejected it at first in front of your friends, but you went home at night and you thought about what you'd heard? What was it like that day? I'll bet if I went around the room, for all of you who know Christ, you could probably talk for an hour on that very topic. It was this grace of Jesus Christ that exploded on the scene in Acts chapter 9, wasn't it, when the writer of this letter, Titus, was confronted by none other than Jesus himself in Acts chapter 9? You talk about the grace of God. What was Paul doing?

8:40He was on his way to Damascus. He was with his posse, if you will. And they were going to extradite all the Christians, the men and the women, back 135 miles south to Jerusalem to make them stand trial and probably kill them, just like he overstood, overlooked. The death of Stephen. And yet the grace of God appears in his life in a profound way. There was a flash of light. All of a sudden, Saul's on the ground. And he hears this voice: Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?

9:21I say that's a definition of grace. He says, Get up and go into Damascus, and I'm going to tell you what's going to have to happen. He says, You, excuse me, you're going to stand before kings, you're going to stand before Gentiles, and you're going to stand in front of the sons of Israel, and you're going to proclaim who I am. You say, Why does a murderer get to do that? Why does a woman who's gone through an abortion get to have grace from God? It's the same reason because Paul had that grace. There's forgiveness in Christ, and so now he's known as the world's greatest evangelist ever, one of the most prolific authors of scripture.

10:09Grace appeared to me when I was a seven-year-old. Young ladies, if you're babysitters, listen up. I didn't grow up in a Christian family. My parents needed a babysitter. And so they invited this young lady that came highly recommended from another neighbor. And she led me to Christ. I wouldn't say that. I became a believer at that time. I really didn't understand. But she explained the gospel to me through the book of Revelation. Scared me to death. What do I have to do? Okay, I need to ask forgiveness. I need to ask Jesus in my heart because that's what my babysitter told me.

10:47And I did that every night for years until I was a teenager. And then Barry Horton stepped into my life. Many of you know I used to compete in water skiing. Barry was one of my most formidable competitors. And we're sitting at a jacuzzi one time, and he says to me, What if you were to die tonight? And you were to stand before God, and he were to say to you, Why should I let you into my heaven?

11:13You Texans might understand this, but I might understood it as an L.A. kid. I was a deer in the headlights. I didn't know what to say. And so he gave me grace, and he led me through Ephesians chapter 2, verses 5 through 9, and he explained grace to me. And God got a hold of my heart. I understand grace. Grace is salvation's cause. Grace in this chapter, in this verse, here is salvation's means. Grace is salvation's origin. It's where it comes from. You don't do anything to earn it, is what Paul is telling Titus here.

11:56Do you see what's going on? Paul's pointing us to the living gospel, the grace of God for eternal life. It's the origin of our salvation. Salvation is a gift. But in verse 11, look at it again. It brings salvation to all men. What does that mean? Is this sort of the proof text for all dogs go to heaven? Is this everybody gets to go through the pearly gates, Paul? Do you think Timothy was struggling with that statement? Is this universalism?

12:33What on earth is going on in the text here? I mean, if it's true that everybody goes into heaven, we might as well just close our Bibles and close our notes and go up to Main Street and sit over at the bar and eat, drink, and be merry for tomorrow we die. Was he addressing the Jews and the Gentiles there? We'll get there, but thanks for asking. I love it. In context, yes. He's addressing believers and unbelievers. Eat, drink, and be merry for tomorrow we die if everybody goes. Isn't it Jesus who said, no one comes to the Father but through me? That doesn't sound like universalism. Isn't it Jesus who said in John 6, 44, no one comes to me unless the Father draws them to me? That word means drag, by the way, not unwillingly. People want to come, but it's that willingness that people are being pulled to Christ because they want that grace. They want to love the Lord. Jesus preached repentance and belief repeatedly. We know that from the New Testament.

13:48Jesus' killers were told by Peter long after Jesus rose from the dead that they were the ones that killed him. He shared the gospel with them. They said, Well, what do we do now? Repent and believe. They didn't have to do a bunch of good works, otherwise, he would have said so. So, isn't it bringing salvation to all men who are saved by grace through faith? Isn't it salvation to all men who repent and trust in Christ and in the resurrection?

14:25Men. Is there anyone amongst us, men, that have earned our salvation in this room? Not one. Teens. Teenagers. Is there anyone amongst you that earned your salvation because you obeyed everything? No. Ladies. Is there any lady in the room who, because She is a well-kept woman. Everybody likes her, and so therefore she's going to heaven. Kids, don't think that the salvation of your parents is passed down to you. Salvation is by God's gift. You must repent. You must believe.

15:24That's this passage. It brings salvation to all men, women, and children. You can't earn it. You can't purchase it. You can't inherit it. It's a gift of grace. News flash. Not all dogs go to heaven. It comes by grace. Not everyone will be with Christ when they die. Universalism is a mockery of what Jesus did on the cross. It's a mockery of the resurrection. Don't let anybody tell you or lead you to believe that all is good with them and they're going to be with Jesus and they continue to a life that's high-handed in rejection to him.

16:15Most will travel the very wide road to eternal hell because they've hated God and they've hated his grace. They want nothing to do with it. We know that from John 3:19. And in verse 11, here, There's no exceptions to the rule. All people that personally receive this free gift of grace will be saved. That's how we live gracefully in a disgraceful world. What about those who reject grace? What about those who want nothing to do with it? Any man or any woman who refuses this gift will be judged. Ephesians 2:5 and 8 and 9. We know it again. Salvation is by grace through faith. It's a gift. Would you join with me in 1 John 4?

17:051 John chapter 4. And as you're turning there, we hear the refrain that people say that, well, grace is free. Grace means free, and it does mean free. But is grace really free? Did it come at no cost? Is it free to us? Yes. Grace isn't free. Grace is very costly. God paid a very high price for grace, as we're about to see in 1 John 4. And if you're there, 1 John 4, verse 9, I just want to read this. I want you to see that it's not free. By this, the love of God was manifested among us, that God sent his only begotten Son into the world that we might live through him.

17:59He sent His unique son. In other words, there was no other son like him. And what happened to him? He was nailed to a cross. But he rose from the dead in verse 10. And this is love. Not that we loved God, did you hear that? Not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his son to be a propitiation. What's that mean? He was the means of our forgiveness. That's what propitiation means. The means of forgiveness for our sins.

18:34When the pressures of the world are bearing down on you, when the joys of life are fleeting, when there's no honor coming your way from your children, and when your parents are AOL, absent without leave. When your spouse doesn't love you like she or he once did and they are not keeping their vows, grace. When your job is on the line and finances are scarce, remember verse 11. What does it say? God's grace appeared to you. It showed up on the scene. And you can remember that first time when you heard about Christ. He alone.

19:22He alone is the cause of your salvation. But there's a second truth for living victoriously in these scandalous ages. Age in which we live, and it's on the screen there. Salvation's response. Salvation's response. Let's look at it one more time: verses 12 and 13. What does grace do? Verse 12, instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires to live sensibly, righteously, and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and for the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus.

19:58Grace instructs us. Grace is our teacher. Grace is our tutor. My dad was my water ski coach when I was growing up, and I was kind of accident-prone, you see, and so I attribute some of that to my father, you see. He says to me, Eric, if you're not following, you're not learning, as the blood is dripping from my chin or from my head, or sores, and aches and pains. But he's right, I'm thankful for my coach. If you're not following, you're learning. He's my instructor, he's guiding me and helping me. When I was in the business world, I love this. It made me sick. Everyone was looking for a life coach. You ever heard of that? Need a life coach. And they spend thousands of dollars for their life coach to tell them, you need a better version of you, you see, and that's going to make you more successful. You need a better version of you, and they pay lots of money. You see, grace is your life coach here in the text. Grace instructs us. Grace is the only thing we need in terms of our life coach. He's there for us. Grace cheers you on to an appropriate response to God's salvation. And in verse 12, we see an appropriate response. Grace is your personal advisor. Grace teaches you. Grace informs you about those things that are obvious. As your personal advisor, grace is your life coach. Grace is telling you, look at it in verse 12, that you would live righteously and that you must. Do you see it in verse 12? Deny ungodliness and worldly desires. It's right there in the verse. Grace instructs us to do those things, it tells us to deny them. And so we have to ask the question: well, what is ungodliness? What is that?

21:49Let's turn over to Jude because Jude's going to give us some instruction on what we mean by this. Jude, there's only one chapter in Jude. It's the book right before Revelation chapter 1. I'm going to spend a lot of time here, but I just want to point out something about ungodliness. We see it in the world today. Verse 17 of Jude. He says, But you, beloved, ought to remember the words that were spoken beforehand by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ. You've been hearing this all along, he's saying.

22:27They were saying to you, in the last time, there were. Be mockers. I don't know if he had 2016 in mind. There will be mockers following after their own godly lusts. These are the ones who cause divisions. Worldly-minded, devoid of the Spirit. Living gracefully means that we embrace what God loves. Living disgracefully means simply this, that we would see those who mock God. So we would say, don't mock God. That's not what He loves. Those who love ungodly living. That's what Jude is talking about. There are those who cause divisions.

23:15See any political speeches lately? It's mind-numbing. It's sickening. Politicians aren't going to heal the world. God's grace is the only answer. Who's hearing it from your mouth? Living disgracefully means that we would have no regard for the Holy Spirit in our lives. So if you've trusted Christ, you've already made the decision. You've already made the decision to deny ungodliness. We call that repentance, don't we? You've said, God, I'm going to depend on your grace. I repent. I change my mind, my attitude, my. Actions about life, and I'm here to glorify you, and that's all I want. That's repentance.

24:09What does it mean to reject ungodliness? Reject that which displeases God, reject that which mocks God, reject those things that are lustful desires that God would be ashamed of in your life. I like the way back in Titus chapter 2, verse 12, I like the way some English Bibles put verse 12. And it reminds me of who was the first lady, just say no to drugs. Was that Nancy Regan? Thank you. Here it's in the text. Here's where she got it, maybe. Say no to ungodliness and worldly passions. Say no. That's what the text is saying here.

24:54That's what it means to reject ungodliness. Say no. Are the grappling hooks of temptation firmly implanted in your corpse as an unbeliever? And it's pulling you ever more closely to the temptations of the world. And grace is beckoning you. It's calling you. It's a free gift. Come to Christ. What is the temptation that sucks you in most? If you were candid with me, it would come to your mind right that, and you just like that, and you would tell me. You don't have to. You know what it is. You know what you struggle with. I know what I struggle with.

25:39The battle is for your soul. The battle is for your mind. And the enemy, the enemy, has a take no prisoner's mandate on your life. Your enemy's goal for you is to abandon God's grace, renounce his love, to coerce you into succumbing to the ungodly passions and lusts and desires of the world that we see in verse 12. Why? That you might not live. He wants you to deny God's grace. So the first truth for living gracefully in these disgraceful times, that salvation is God's gracious gift. It's a gift from the Lord. The second truth for living gracefully in these degrading times is for you to deny passions, as we've just seen here, that are an affront to the price that God paid for your soul with his only, unique, one and only kind of a son.

26:45And to live righteously, soberly, and in verse 12, do you see it? In this present age, what he's saying is right now, now, that's how we live graciously in a disgraceful time. World. We live for Christ now. This means to live gracefully in these disgraceful times. And this might involve some decisiveness on your part, some big decisions. Living righteously and denying passions means that you might have to make some hard decisions in your life. Maybe when I said what kind of lustful things do you struggle with, maybe you need to unplug the TV set or cancel your subscription.

27:32Maybe you need somebody to push the Control-H on your keyboard and look at the history of what you've been looking at on the Internet. I don't know if you have a Ctrl H. Help me out here, Mr. I.T. What do you do on the iPhone? Is there a way to monitor that? I'm sure there is. Okay. Hand it to your wife. Good. Okay. Hand it to your parents. Hand it to somebody. Hold yourself accountable. Let them hold you. What about this? What about praying for other people?

28:01Get your mind out of the things that you struggle with and pray for somebody who's struggling. Disciple someone or be discipled. Be a part of partners one-on-one. Learn to disciple somebody so that you can take it to the next generation. Have someone over for dinner. Have someone over for lunch. Take them out to lunch. Weep with those who weep. Get past your own struggles and help somebody. You know, we're a family here. Aren't we? Regardless of our socio-economic status, we need each other, right?

28:42I'm a pastor. I want to encourage people. I can't write a check for a bazillion dollars to send missionaries into the missionary field, but I can go to the missionaries and encourage them. You probably can't write a check for that either, but you can encourage somebody in this room to stand tall for Christ when they're struggling with sin in their life, when ministry needs help here at Emmanuel. Encourage them to do that. Encourage one another. Well, there's a second response to grace, and it involves waiting in verse 13. Waiting. Verse 13, he says, looking, that's waiting, anticipating, looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus.

29:24So to live gracefully in these difficult times, we can cling to our blessed hope. We can cling to the truth that Jesus is our great God and Savior, and he's coming back. When you're struggling with those sins, those grappling hooks are in your flesh, and they're pulling you ever more quickly to give in. He's your great God and Savior, and He's returning. When He returns, will He find you faithful? He walked out of the tomb. He rose from the dead. And our great hope resides in the fact that he's coming back. We long for his return. We wait for his return because verse 13 tells us looking for that blessed hope. And verse 13 speaks of Jesus' deity, doesn't it? It tells us that he is God. This letter several times refers to Jesus as our Savior, refers to the Father as our Savior. But in this passage, we see Jesus that He is our great God and Savior.

30:38Why is that important to us? Why does that mean anything when we're struggling with those things that are enticing us? Well, because Jesus is your Maker, Jesus is your lawgiver, Jesus is your Redeemer, your Redeemer, and He's your great God and Savior. He's your only hope. And without Him, there's no hope, and you die. That's it. There are two realities that each and every one of us must face right now. Two parts of the first one: Jesus is either your blessed hope, Jesus is your blessed hope, and He's your great God and Savior, or Jesus is your judge.

31:24Jesus is to be feared because once you die without Him, it's over and there is no. No hope because hope resides in him, and when he's gone, you've dismissed him from your life. There is no hope. You ought to be torn apart on the inside. And upon your final rejection of him, he will grant you the desires of your heart, and you will be separated from him forever. We call this the wrath of abandonment. You can read more about the wrath of abandonment so clearly in Romans chapter 1.

32:01I want to address people in ministries here at Emmanuel. Partners, one-on-one leaders, pioneer leaders, musicians, buildings and grounds, elm mentors, young adults, elders, nursery workers, prayer warriors, and seminarians. The people that you are ministering to are living in an evil age, and it's getting worse. Are you shepherding them? Are you looking for a shepherd to disciple you, to coach you along the way? Knowing that grace is your coach, your instructor, your guide, how does that change your approach to the ministries in which you are involved?

32:48Are you cheering them on? You can do it. You can do it. Put your arm around them. Pray for them. Cry with them when they're crying, when they're struggling. Deny ungodliness. Encourage them to do that, to live soberly. To live righteously, to live eagerly, and to watch for the return of their great God and Savior, Christ Jesus. Here's the final truth for surviving these heart-wrenching days. These days that our culture hates Jesus, it's the third point. Salvation's purpose in verse 14. It's a purpose here. Do you see the purpose?

33:28I'll just read it: who gave himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, to purify for himself a people. Here it is. Here's his purpose. A people for his own possession, zealous for good deeds. We just talked about some good deeds. He's given himself so that he could redeem us from sin and make us clean for himself. And we say, God, why did you do all this? Why did you save Paul on the road to Damascus?

34:08Why do you save killers? Why do you save me, Jesus? I remember my history. Why does Jesus save people? Why does he die? Why did Jesus redeem you? Why did Jesus bother coming to a multitude of people who high-handedly rejected him and walked away from him? Why did he? Give his life for people who use him, abuse him, and forsake him. Verse 14, I want to read it again. He gave himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed and to purify for himself. Here it is, a people for his own possession. He wants you to be his people.

34:54Israel rejected him. God wants a people who will love him and serve him and understand his grace. That's what he wants. A people that he could call his very own. Wow. That's grace. How simple and profound is that truth? He wanted a people to be saved by his free gift of grace. Verse 14, he wanted people eager, think zealous, think fanatical. He wanted a people think passionate about doing good deeds. Doing good works. What are these? Peter summarizes this a little bit differently in 1 Peter 3.13. 1 Peter 3.13, he says this: Who is there to harm you if you prove zealous for good works?

35:56Vladimir Putin, do you really understand what you're doing? Because God's people will continue doing good works, and you can't stop them. You might kill them, but you can't stop Jesus' church. We don't have a Putin here, but brothers and sisters in Christ, it's not going to be much longer. Maybe not in our lifetimes, maybe in our kids, maybe in our grandkids. What are the good deeds from God's perspective? Can you think of some good deeds? Deeds that exalt Christ with eagerness. That's what he's looking for. Those kinds of deeds. Leading worship music with a guitar, with a piano, with drums, the sound booth.

36:44The people in the sound booth are helping us worship tonight. Those are good deeds. Deeds that zealously facilitate the advancement of the gospel. Look, if you're in line to feed somebody at the soup kitchen and there's no advancement of the gospel, I'm sorry, that's not a good deed from God's perspective. He wants them to hear the truth of Christ. Deeds that zealously facilitate the advancement of the gospel, partners one-on-one, Sunday school, Elm, pioneers showing the bush pastor in Malawi how to reach his church for Christ so that they can disciple others. Thank you, Pastor Tom.

37:30Businessmen, this church has sent out this pastor to help businessmen in Singapore, Berlin, New York, and coming up shortly, Manila to understand how to represent Christ in the workplace. In your workplace, what are you doing that brings the gospel? We need to pour this together, pull this together. How do we live gracefully? When our society's disgraceful deeds are all around us, it's like a python squeezing the life out of us. And yet we move on. Never forget that God's grace is free. That's the cause of salvation. Never forget that God's grace continually coaches you, leads you, guides you, teaches you, responds to, react to appropriately your salvation. That's verses 12 through 13. What about salvation's purpose again in verse 14? Jesus gave himself to redeem you, to purchase you back to himself, to make you his own people. He just wants his own people who are zealously, eagerly chomping at the bit to serve him.

38:46So, how about we get started? How about we continue the work that we're doing here? In spite of what the world is doing around us, in spite of it falling apart, in spite of freaking out because we might lose our tax status, how do we? How about we just serve Christ? Let me give you some options. How do we respond to God's grace with good works? Partners 1-on-1 is really the entry gate, is becoming the entry gate to all ministries here at Emmanuel. We're asking people to go through this so that we can train others to train the next generation so we're all on the same page, equipping our people to serve and to build and to prepare.

39:33You can attend the church business meeting on Wednesday. Find out what we're planning on. Look for some clarification. Ask some questions. You can man the table at the Texas AM Impact Fair on August 8th. Matt Gentry is leading that up. I think he's still looking for some helpers on August 8th. Would you like to be a part of that? What about pass out? The biggest question. Do you have one of these? They're in the baskets in the windows. Take one home. They're free. Watch it. You can hand somebody this in line as they're standing there with a bun without a hot dog and say, Would you take this home and watch it? We need your help. What's next? What about the gigam week barbecue? You can do the same there. You can hand these out at the gigamweek barbecue. You can serve. You can tell people about Christ as they stand in line. I'm told there's 5,000 people that come to this event.

40:27What about praying for your pastors as they prepare? Prepare for their sermons. You know what I would like to see at Emmanuel if somebody would lead this up. Perhaps you would take this challenge tonight. I think it'd be great if we would gather a team together that would pray every week for our pastor, Tom. He spends hours pouring over the text to bring it to us. Would you pray for him? Would you maybe pray that maybe there would be a team of people that would agree to pray all throughout the week as he prepares?

40:58God shows him a text and he has to repent of his sin, just like we do. And then he brings it to us and we hear it and we repent because we hear. Pray for him. Buildings and grounds. We need help with buildings and grounds. Mentor. Marilyn's always looking for mentors at Elm. I can't help but to think that there's a breeding ground through Partners One-on-one that as we disciple people through this, that she can recruit from them. Be a pioneer leader. Drive a Sunday morning van or pioneer's van. Assist with Sunday school and Sunday breakfast. Pray Sunday meal. These are some opportunities. There's more I could list, but I'm out of time.

41:42Let's just close with a word of prayer, and perhaps I'll just leave this list up and you can be thinking about some of these things. Father, we're so grateful for grace. We didn't deserve it. You just wanted us to be your people, a people that you could call your own possession and say, So, for those of us who have received that grace, who have repented and believed, and have trusted in Christ, we are your people. We are what you've asked for. We want to respond just by saying, Yes, I'll go. I'll do something.
